She is quite mature but I don't want to freak her out. We have watched Stranger Things together. Obviously nothing like Squid Game. She likes thoughtful drama that we can discuss. Loved the film Passengers with Jennifer Lawrence. Suggestions please? I've watched the 3% but not sure if it's suitable. Thanks

Maze Runner or Divergent series maybe

SukiPook · 30/12/2021 21:41

Has she seen the Divergent Trilogy?

Dottyteapot · 30/12/2021 21:41

Maze runner is good, although my son tells me the 2nd film is nothing like the book.

Love and Monsters

Rexthesnail · 30/12/2021 21:50

Divergent for definite

RunningFromInsanity · 30/12/2021 21:50

Maze runner 2 and 3 might be a bit scary but 1 is fine.
Divergent is a good shout too.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/12/2021 21:51

Also Love and Monsters definitely.

ThisIsJeopardy · 30/12/2021 21:52

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if you have Disney+

littleowls83 · 30/12/2021 22:57

Divergent series (other than the last one) and Michael Grant Gone series are good. The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness is also good then you get more girly ones like The Selection. They are more young adult than 11 but if she was fine with the Hunger Games then would be fine with these too I think. If she is in a secondary with a proper school librarian they should be able to recommend and supply all of these but I know they are virtually an extinct species now.

Xmasiscancelledagain · 30/12/2021 23:01

Are we talking books or movies? Because usually the books are good and the films are absolute crap.

Divergent is OK, although I couldn't get past the second book. Not watched the movies.
Maze runner movies are alright, but I've never read the books.
The Chaos Walking series is good, but again I got annoyed by the last book (and because it never really satisfactorily explained a major plot point). I can't face the film because Daisy Ridley is blond in it and she doesn't look like how I pictured her character.

littleowls83 · 30/12/2021 23:36

For film/TV - Logan's Run is a classic, Divergent series OK until the ending, Chaos Walking film not good, Maze Runner, first film good then it gets wierd. Something like The Host maybe? I agree the genre definitely doesn't get a fair chance on film.

There are TV series that are a bit more scary/ violent eg 3% or The Hundred that are probably a bit old, especially if she has only seen the Hunger Games rather than read the books, which IMO are scarier. There are a couple of films on Amazon called The Fifth Wave and the Fifth Floor (I think) both might not be suitable, I watch teen movies and disaster movies while cleaning so they don't always get my full attention!

There are also some American TV dramas on prime - there seems to be a whole sub genre about small American seaside towns that suddenly have wierd stuff happen to them - that might be good as sort of scary/wierd but less violent.

If you're talking books, I'd suggest Unwind, Wool and Vox. She'll LOVE Unwind. I've been a teacher for many years and it's the one book that kids sit in absolute silence to listen to.

There's is a YA series called Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry. It's set roughly fifteen years after the zombie apocalypse. The survivors have all adapted and live in fenced off towns, outside of the towns the country is a wasteland referred to as The Great Rot and Ruin. The story is told from the POV of teens who have grown up in this new world.

WildishBambino · 31/12/2021 00:25

If you want some classic books then look at John Wyndham (Day of the Triffids, brilliant short story collections).

jamfirstcreamsecond · 31/12/2021 03:19

Amazon prime has Walking Dead: the World Beyond. It's nowhere near as gruesome as the Walking Dead and might be suitable. It's the story of the next generation following the zombie apocalypse and has teens in the leading roles.

momiamarichman · 31/12/2021 03:23

The 'Gone' book series (By Michael Grant) is great for that age, dystopia, multiple books in series to enjoy. I remember loving it in secondary school Smile

Also
Divergent series
The Extinction trials series (similar to hunger games but with dinosaurs)
Matched book series (romance but dystopia as well)

DockOTheBay · 31/12/2021 03:30

Divergent and The Maze Runner are both good book series. The films are OK, but books are better (as is almost always the case)

ThankYouDebbie · 31/12/2021 03:38

Noughts and Crosses - YA book series

skeptile · 31/12/2021 06:03

The Giver is brilliant. By Lois Lowry. She's written 3 others, which make up The Giver Quartet.

icedcoffees · 31/12/2021 09:24

The Exodus series by Julie Bertagna.

RunningFromInsanity · 31/12/2021 11:12

The Host

BiggerBoat1 · 31/12/2021 11:18

If you're talking books then the Divergent Series are definitely worth a try.

Films - Alita Battle Angel or Ghost in the Shell
TV - my DD absolutely loved Good Omens with David Tennant and Martin Sheen
