Barbie and Sindy in the 80s

Hi

I’ve been reminiscing with a friend about our favourite Christmas presents as children in the 80s. We both loved Sindy and Barbie and both got the three-storey townhouse one year for Christmas and a swimming pool. But we remember the swimming pools differently. Hers was the one that shows up on Google images now, whereas I can’t find any trace of mine. I’ve checked with my mum and she confirms I remember it correctly.

Did any of you have the same one I wonder - it was free form style, with a graduated Rocky/grassy edge to it and a plateau for a sun lounger. I can’t remember if it was Barbie or Sindy.

Also, did any of you have a pink and purple Barbie nightclub, with a revolving dance floor and a disk shaped backdrop with flashy lights? Another I distinctly remember, but doesn’t show up anywhere on Google!

@Fuuuuuckit

Mine was this exact one. I had the pink kitchen unit. The wardrobe with big S on each door. The white fancy dining table. The fluency pink bed.

@NoToLandfill

I had a Pippa's Apartment, I LOVED it
I loved my Pippa dolls and was desperate for the apartment but never got one 😫
Obsidiansphere · 30/12/2021 20:21

I’m so envious of you all, I had to make my own house out of shoe boxes 🤣

@Obsidiansphere me too. I don't think I had an actual barbie or sindy either.

Marmite27 · 30/12/2021 20:23

@FindingMeno

I do remember Blue Peter making a barbie/ sandy house. It involved cutting up Ski yoghurt pots for seats.
Don’t forget the max factor eyeshadow container to turn into a bbq!
Comefromaway · 30/12/2021 20:24

This was the one I had www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/202873158188910107/

My dad worked in the factory that made Sindy dolls so I had it all (used to give it for free /huge discounted) I loved the apartment and the convertible.

missfliss · 30/12/2021 20:25

@mnahmnah I had that house too ( my god I loved it ) - I'm sure there was a lift that went up the left side too

RhubarbFairy · 30/12/2021 20:27

I had the three storey dollhouse but no pool. Mine had the bathroom and kitchen on the ground floor, living room on the first floor, bedroom on the second and balcony on the top. The bathroom had a working shower and it had a lift to take you to all floors.

I quickly worked out that my Quints were the perfect size to be the babies of the family so my Quint cot also went into the bedroom.

I had two horses and a pink Cadillac. Most of my things were Sindy, not Barbie. I did have a Barbie and amazingly, Sindy was taller and skinnier!

TurquoiseDragon · 30/12/2021 20:28

I've still got a lot of Sindy stuff, in original boxes. I think the dining set still has almost all the tiny cutlery. It's all packed away, and I don't think I'll be using it anytime soon, so may as well sell it.

RhubarbFairy · 30/12/2021 20:29

My house was very similar to the one above, but the ground floor had a partition wall. The bathroom was on the left next to the lift and the kitchen was on the right.

It's still in my mother's loft along with all the furniture, dolls, everything.

RhubarbFairy · 30/12/2021 20:34

I think this was mine, though my furniture was different including a shower instead of a bath. It was still a blue bathroom suite though. Very on trend.

I don't think I had any houses, cars or pools fir my Sindy. But I do remember one outfit that I absolutely loved. A quick Google and there it is ... just as I remember it. It was a special 'Royal' edition in 1977, apparently. Must have been for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. I was seven.

@TheSpottedZebra

I had Day to Night Barbie, whoch was so so 80s. I have just read that it was bought back as a reproduction. "Day to Night Barbie celebrates the women's workplace revolution of the 1980s with the ultimate wardrobe transformation!"

She was dressed in a power suit/air hostess outfit, avec boater, then you turned her clothes inside out, swapped her court shoes for strappy sandals and ta-daa, she was ready to go out dancing

Day to night Barbie was my early heroine… I wanted to be just like her… my DH sometimes says he’s just Ken to my Day to Night Barbie! I honestly thought when I grew up I’d go straight from office to dinner just like her! Xx
BlossomValley · 30/12/2021 20:39

Wasn’t Shelley Barbie’s sister?

As a child of the 1970’s I had Sindy dolls, my friends across the road had the furniture - one had the kitchen with the cooker that made ‘real’ cooking sounds for frying and boiling (plus I think it had a whistling kettle); the other had the bedroom with wardrobe, chest of drawers and bed plus she had the bathroom with shower that had a pump you pressed to get water out of the shower head, a toilet and a basin.

We used to spend hours in each other’s gardens or on the green playing with them. My brother had a couple of Action Man sets including the zip wire tower and he used to send Sunday down it!!

I loved Sindy in the 80's, the house, stables all the furniture and accesories, I preferred them all to Barbie. I do seem to remember Sindy had some kind of disco, though it might of been a T.V studio or both. Did not have it but my friend did and she used to have her Sindy in the disco studio dressed up in an outfit designed by the Emanuel's. Happy Days

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/12/2021 20:41

@FlowerFlour I had the horse - didn't even remember it having a name. I was forced to share it with a much younger step sister and she drew on it in crayon. I was fuming!
I still have it in the loft but the reins have snapped :(
I loved the removable horseshoes.

Mainly I remember my dad telling me we couldn't afford it so I wasn't getting it. Then surprised me with it thinking I'd be thrilled. I said I didn't want it and then played with it in secret for years Blush.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 30/12/2021 20:46

I had the Sindy dining set, it was beautiful. I also had 6 Pippa’s including Princess Pippa who had hair almost to her feet.
I didn’t have the dolls house but had a bookcase and each shelf was a different floor. I made lots of Sindy clothes.
I also had some dolls called Disco Dolls that were slightly smaller than Sindy, 10 inches I think.
I have an adult dolls house now and have filled it with mini Barbies!

TheChild · 30/12/2021 20:47

Little bit off topic but does anything else think the quality of Barbie nowadays is crap? I'm a Barbie child of the 90s and had lots of different accessories eg car, fold out bedroom, kitchen set, school set and remember it being sturdy and good quality. I looked at the Barbie dream house for DD for Christmas and for £££ it looks like cheap, flimsy plastic that would last all of 2 minutes 😔 I actually found the fold out bedroom I had on Ebay but it would cost a fortune as it was a seller based in America.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/12/2021 20:48

My mother refused to buy me a Sindy or Barbie. I had an Action Girl (and her useless horse).

Tempnamelady · 30/12/2021 20:49

Oh god amazing ! I had the Sandy house, and the pool which was kind of kidney shaped and I think had a jacuzzi effect . I had all the furniture too, I loved it :)

Tempnamelady · 30/12/2021 20:52

I also had a six million dollar woman doll and beauty salon 🤣🤣 , she looked a bit masculine I remember. I also had the six million dollar woman outfit .
Anyone remember this?

DickMabutt73962 · 30/12/2021 20:52

Not really on point but if you loved Barbie abs haven't seen it yet, watch 'The Toys That Made Us' on Netflix, it's a series and there's an episode on Barbie (think it's the first series). Learned some eye-opening things!

QueefofSheena · 30/12/2021 20:53

I’d forgotten about the tiny cutlery!
