2022- how do you set goals if you have so many?

MarineBlue33 · 30/12/2021 15:32

This year did not pan out like I wanted and I want to set goals in many areas:

To name a few...

weight loss and exercise
Declutter a lot
Work on improving a couple of relationships
voluntary work

But a lot of it seems daunting and I get disappointed when I don't achieve anything.

How do you begin when you have a lot you want to achieve?
Any success stories too?

Have a listen to the most recent podcast on ‘all it takes is a goal’ by Jon Acuff

Cut it down in to chunks. Schedule meeting a friend or call a friend whilst you are decluttering. I clean skirting boards and switches whilst I’m on the phone. Schedule in exercise and meal prep for healthy eating.

If I don’t plan and schedule things in they don’t get done.

Thanks. Those are good tips

I would get a notebook with sections in and I would use a section for each goal. Then, I would break each goal into small parts. Eg, weight loss - I would aim for 5 or 10 lbs then go from there. I would attach something to the goal - how would I feel after losing 10lbs? More confident, I might have dropped a dress size & my clothes would fit better. I might be able to get back into nice clothes that currently don't fit me.
I would attach some intention to the goal so you have something to work towards. I plan to do some daily journaling that relates to my goals to monitor progress & keep me accountable.

Look up Paul Mort on Instagram- he talks about goals & accountability.

Good luck OP.

Also, look up Marie Kondo for decluttering - strange but life changing.

@Whatliesbeneath707 Thank you - that's helpful. What do you mean by adding intention to the goal?

As others have said, your goals are too broad and so it is hard to feel like you have ever reached them. And when we keep trying to reach unachievable goals, it leads us to become demotivated.

Firstly, write all your goals down, even if they are too broad. This reduces the mental load of thinking about them all the time. They are in one place when you need to access them. Then look at each one and see if you can break them down into smaller chunks. This does not have to be a complete breakdown of each goal into tasks, just enough to get a start.

The tasks need to be actions not results e.g. the task is not lose 1lb this week because that doesn't say how, but for example, your first tasks could be

  • Weight loss
Create one week's healthy menu plan Shop for week's menu Eat healthy menu for one week. Walk 30 minutes extra 3 days for a week.

When making these smaller plans, decide on what your celebration will be when you complete your tasks. It could be a small glass of prosecco, a trip to the cinema or whatever gives you a little happiness. When we feel our successes, it makes starting the next set of tasks easier as we are more confident of achieving them.

But remember to be realistic. Don't take on too much at once. Better to do a few things well than give up because you feel overloaded. Over time, you will find that you can take on more as you are more motivated and in a good habit of achievement.

Get an accountability buddy. This can be a friend, family member, online buddy or professional buddy. Some find it easier to hire someone objective as family encouragement can sometimes feel like nagging.

So, start slowly, with small but achievable goals and remember to celebrate even small successes.

Declutter

Example decide how you are going to achieve this

Start with a small goal, one drawer a day - empty one cupboard - collect on bag of rubbish

Decide to do one room at a time for example rather than the whole house. Then break that down. Clothes sort, rubbish collect, charity shop drop with books or ornaments unwanted gifts etc and make a list when these will be done by

I would also time these things - you spend longer thinking about it rather than doing it!!
