What time is too late to vacuum?

DH is at work and doesn't get home till 8-9pm so isn't able to help.

I've got a high octane very mobile stuntman baby so vacuuming during the day is proving very tricky. He's too old for a bouncer/jumperoo.

The dirt is driving me mad but I think the only time I'll realistically get to vacuum is after DS is in bed.

We live in a terraced house, but it feels pretty sound proof - I WFH and never hear the neighbours vacuum or other noise.

Which now makes me wonder if we're seen as the noisy ones 😬

What comes across in your post is that you are a thoughtful and considerate neighbour which means you're half way there! I'm in a flat and we all reckon 9am to 9pm are the hours for washing machines, vacuums etc. Would it be worth mentioning it to your neighbours when you next see them? ?

How loud is your vacuum?! I'm in a Victorian terrace and I've never heard my neighbours hoover.

GrendelsGrandma · 30/12/2021 14:35
  1. Lower your standards and vacuum less often
  2. Get DH to do it at weekends
  3. Strap baby to your back
  4. Robot hoover

Just vacuum! If the floor is that dirty then hoover!

Leftbutcameback · 30/12/2021 15:00

I’ve vacuumed our landing (permanently full of cat hair) up to 10pm. It doesn’t take long and doesn’t adjoins next door.

Leftbutcameback · 30/12/2021 15:01

But I absolutely second the idea of a robot hoover. Love mine!

RedCandyApple · 30/12/2021 15:02

I’ve definitely heard my neighbours but I’m a gff, I think unless you live in a top floor flat then it will be fine

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/12/2021 15:02

Is your DC walking yet? It might work if you buy a toy vacuum cleaner and both of you vacuum together.

CherryRedDMs · 30/12/2021 15:04

Robot vacuum when you go out? Or just let the baby help hoovering.

AutumnAnn · 30/12/2021 15:05

I live in a Victorian terraced house and hoover whenever I want, midnight, 3am, midday...you get the idea. My neighbours are assholes so i actually don't care if i wake them up or disturb them.
When we lived in a flat it was up to 7pm.

ds had a toy vacuum that only came out when I was vacuuming (and there was music and singing involved to add to the "fun" 🙄) even if I got less than 1/2 a room done at a time at least something got done. He "helped" load washing machine or hang up the laundry, noisily played with pots and wooden spoons on the floor when I was doing something in kitchen etc Intersperse chores at speed with play time to keep it fun.

Depends on their age what they can engage with, if very young start working towards it now.

8pm isn't too late for a quick 15 min run around with the vacuum.

SpiceRat · 30/12/2021 15:29

Carrier and strap baby to you. Did this when DD was a couple of weeks old. Easy Peasy and no fretting about upsetting neighbours x

december2020 · 30/12/2021 21:34

I have no idea how loud my vacuum is! I've never been at a neighbours house or walking outside while I've been vacuuming 😬 but never had a complaint or angry wall banging. Though have done it during sociable hours.

I just hear about people ranting of naughty neighbours and their aggressive vacuums.

DS is 13 months, too old to sit still but too young to join in. I'd spend most of my time making sure he isn't doing some new stunt move like climbing into a toilet or climbing up a bookcase (he's a stuntman..) instead of vacuuming while he's up.

But he went down at 8pm and I hesitantly took the vacuum out to do the downstairs.

And oh it was glorious!
And oh so satisfying!
And long awaited!

Clearly I need to get a hobby...

I vacuum when DS is in bed. Also in a terrace. I feel guilty if I get the hoover out after 10. Before that feels fair enough to me.

nov202 · 30/12/2021 21:43

I could vacuum at 3am if I wanted to! I live in a Victorian terrace and never hear my neighbours and vice versa.
