If you've overcome generalised anxiety, what helped?

I'm working from home this week and I keep getting pangs of anxiety for no particular reason.
It's often irrational thoughts about tiny issues but the physical feeling of anxiety leaves me not able to concentrate and feeling sick.

I suffer with anxiety and depression on and off but when there is no reason for it, I find it much harder to deal with.

If you've been able to overcome generalised anxiety, please could you share how?

Propranolol and hypnosis.

Itstheprinciple · 30/12/2021 12:52

Citalopram.

Seriously, life changing for me.

Snorkello · 30/12/2021 21:31

Reading helps me. I’m much happier as it’s a great distraction. Plus a few walks of you feel down. Get some space from work and take a proper lunch break. That will help. Hope you feel better soon.

PenOrPencil · 30/12/2021 21:32

Sertraline

ikeairgin · 30/12/2021 21:36

Morning yoga (30 mins) lunchtime nature break and evening guided meditation. This is a long term cure though, took about 6 months.

Regular exercise (3 bike rides a week/2 swims)

No booze. No cigs. Mostly cook from scratch.

Short term
Breathing exercises (Longer out breath than in breath) and beta blockers

FrownedUpon · 30/12/2021 21:40

Daily exercise
Getting out in the countryside
Healthy eating
Reading

Counselling and living a simple life. I am an introvert at heart and have embraced this instead of feeling I have to do lots of things I don’t like to please other people eg big social occasions

flowerycurtain · 30/12/2021 22:23

nHs CBt counselling for general anxiety.

From that I now do a mindfulness at lunchtime and progressive body relaxation at bedtime. I also have strategies in place when I feel the worry eg identify it and if it's practical I follow a system to do something about it. If it's hypothetical I allow myself 10 mins of allotted time to sit and do nothing but worry.

It's taken a bit of practice and I'm not there yet but these things really really help. As does running, eating well and seeing my friends m. Good. Luck

DariaMorgendorffer · 30/12/2021 22:24

CBT

anotherchocolate · 30/12/2021 22:24

Exercise.

ThirdElephant · 30/12/2021 22:27

I don't run from the anxiety any more. When I feel it, I plough straight into it and interrogate it. I ask myself repeatedly what the absolute worst thing that could happen would be, then I make a plan of what to do if that scenario arises. I remind myself that worrying will not work to prevent it happening and will only ruin the intervening time and give myself permission (weird as it sounds) to stop worrying about it. Sometimes I focus on my breathing too.

Staggersaurus · 30/12/2021 22:33

If you’ve been stuck indoors more than usual your vitamin d levels might be low? That massively affects my mood. Also limiting social media really helps me, especially Facebook.

georgarina · 30/12/2021 22:33

I have ptsd which has caused severe anxiety, so bad it actually meant I became selectively mute

Psych meds didn't help me. Things that did..

Propranolol (for panic attacks/public speaking mainly)
Limiting caffeine
Eating healthily and limiting simple carbs and sugar
Cardio
Massage
Acupuncture
Getting back in touch with myself - listening to a song from when I was younger, reading a favourite book, watching a favourite film. Something calming and familiar
Being honest about it...not stressing about being stressed

CandleWick4 · 30/12/2021 22:35

Propranolol

QuercusRose · 30/12/2021 22:40

I get the same as you but have recently started couch to 5k - turns out running can clear the anxiety completely (at least for the rest of the day). Seems to use up the adrenaline or something rather than let it keep on building up.

lochmaree · 30/12/2021 22:52

sertraline, only 25mg a day but it's enough

exercise and being outdoors helps me. I love cycling, walking, gardening.

I also now try to just allow thoughts in and out, and remind myself that "bad" thoughts are just that, thoughts.

GinandGobbledegook · 30/12/2021 22:52

Thanks all. Reading the replies reminded me that I actually stopped feeling anxious when taking vitamin D and doing 3 spin classes a week.

It dropped off when I got Covid and I'm terrible at taking tablets so that goes a long way to explain it.

Eating healthier and less social media would probably also do a lot to help!

Great advice here.
Walks are a massive help. Collect twigs, leaves. Nature stuff, do a collection box from each walk. Switch off the news, radio, TV. Really helps. Nytol at night. Baths with sea salts.

sofakingcool · 30/12/2021 23:05

I've not overcome it completely, but find going out for walks really helps when I'm feeling particularly anxious

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 30/12/2021 23:08

Escitalopram and Pregabalin

gamerchick · 30/12/2021 23:09

Propranolol for a few years. Then I started at the gym and don't need them anymore.

MouseholeCat · 30/12/2021 23:09

Not drinking alcohol, meditation, CBT, and lately (due to postpartum anxiety) an SSRI.
