Can I make money from BMW parts? Beautiful old car on its last legs and how?

Strange question!
My beautiful old car is on its last legs apparently

But the interior is beautiful, walnut steering wheel, lovley seat, lovley dashboard.
Can I sell any of that? If so how?

BMW vintage owners club?

Do you have somewhere to store an old incomplete car for a year or two, without your family disowning you?

Or offer the whole thing for sale as scrap.

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 17:06

No we don't have space to have it sat for ages but I didn't know there were BMW clubs! Thanks. Just seems such a shame its so beautiful inside.

You could dismantle it bit by bit and sell parts on eBay, but you’d probably need a degree of mechanical knowledge to do that, and you’d definitely need time and storage space.

I’d sell the whole thing for spares/repair on eBay.

What model/year is it OP?

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 18:55

Snot that's a really good idea!

Everyone who comes into contact with it (tyre place) garage, mobile mechanic all say how beautiful she is 😍 and how they would keep her going.
About 20 years old but old style business model..

Shade17 · 30/12/2021 19:03

Can you be more specific? What’s the exact model? Should be able to work out if it’s worth breaking.

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 20:00

325i

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 20:03

It's more the walnut etc.. Even the automatic gear thing is lovely.
I'll never be able to afford such a lovely car again.

OP posts:
FelicityBeedle · 30/12/2021 20:06

Is it the cream and walnut interior by any chance?

Elieza · 30/12/2021 20:23

Can they really not repair it if you love it so much?

Shade17 · 30/12/2021 20:31

Is it SE or M-Sport trim? I’m guessing SE by the wood trim. What body style is it? Saloon, coupe, touring etc?

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 20:36

Yeah cream and walnut but because old business model it's that higher end even though by today's standards its absolutely outdated. I adore the controls.. I feel like a pilot

It has four doors.
Apparently suspension is going on it /brake pipes.
But also sensor on electrical something...

The car tyre man said he'd keep it going, he would take pleasure from the keeping it going.
Obviously it's not his car to keep going.

When I see other BMW non interest me and non seem to as nice!

Sad to say but sounds like the least desirable interior there is. Most owners bin the wood, I doubt you’ll find anyone wanting to buy some. The good news is that being the medium sized 6 cylinder, there is a market for the engine and transmission assuming they’re in good working order.

Elieza · 30/12/2021 20:49

Perhaps you need to get a quote for the repairs and then decide.

If it would cost you £200 a month say for a newer car, and you can get your cat repaired for say £2k, then if you keep it going for ten months you break even financially.

GrumpyLivesInMyHouseNow · 30/12/2021 20:50

325i is the top end of
The 3rd dies. If it's an E30 model people might be willing to buy the complete car for good money. Depends on condition and mileage. Selling it in parts can prove to be a pain in the arise and not as lucrative as you think. Find a good bmw forum and start to put out the feelers, also look at eBay and put it as an auction but with a reserve price

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 22:28

I was just thinking to sell it it would only be a few hundred pounds if that.

Eliza

Yes that's good thinking!
What I can't work out is, I can't really afford to buy a good second hand car so maybe makes sense to keep this one going? That's what I've done so far because it's the devil I know and I'm going to buying plastic box.

Re the interior I've never been fond of it in other cars I've felt it's old fashioned!
But in this one it just works.

Yes I'll try a forum. Just seem shame for it to be scrapped junku

If it’s 20 years old it’s definitely not an e30, most likely an e46. The 325i is the mid range and no one really wants an SE saloon add in the fact it’s neither economical or powerful so probably the least desirable engine as well.

Most fora won’t let you post for-sale ads without a minimum post count or premium membership. The best place is going to be eBay after a good wash with a detailed description and any faults listed. If it’s reasonably low mileage and the engine and ‘box are good then someone will buy it for those. It’s probably a £1-1.5k car depending on the above and MOT etc.

Newyearoldyou · 31/12/2021 22:31

@Shade17

Thanks for the tips Sad

I don't think it's that uneconomical though.
It's not a gas guzzler.

It's got an extremely powerful kick down eg on roundabouts that almost gives whip lash.

But... It then struggles a little to get up to say 40.

If I put my foot down other cars will over take... (but rarely match initial foot down) however when it hits say 65 something happens to it and it glides... I've never gone faster than 80/85 ( very briefly to clear lorry or dangerous driver serving) but it seems to be extremely fast then.

Newyearoldyou · 31/12/2021 22:32

The tyre man admiring it says the engine looks new.

But it's got damage on front wing.

OP posts:
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 31/12/2021 22:50

Ask the tyre guy if he'd like to buy it?

MargaretThursday · 31/12/2021 23:34

Df sold his beloved car (not BMW) from 1980s earlier this year to a collector. He looked around to find a dealer who would advertise it around to look for someone who would love it like he did. It took 6 months to find someone, but it's just passed its MOT with the new owner.

Elieza · 01/01/2022 11:10

Your engine power could be to do with torque and power bands. Or something like that. Although I’m not sure in an automatic how it works but presume similar.

I’ve had various cars of similar engine sizes for body weight.

Some seem to have a lot of power at low speeds. Others seem to take a while to respond when I put my foot down but then they really go. Others have no power until they are going faster and then they can fairly move when I put my foot down.

It’s just how the engine is and how quickly a turbo kicks in. Apparently. Although I confess it’s been a while since I had these discussions with a mechanic….
