Anyone been ice skating recently?

In a fit of total and utter madness I decided to book ice skating for tomorrow for dd and I.

I am now getting myself worked up about what to bloody wear!! I get anxious about this sort of stuff anyway, so I don't know why I thought this was a good idea.

Can anyone tell me how cold it gets (I did actually used to figure skate as a kid several times a week, but I was young and foolish then and can't remember being cold. I am old and fat now and will be clinging onto the side for dear life or borrowing dd's seal as an aid), do I need a coat etc?!? There are no lockers to store anything.

Heeeeellllpppp!!!! And please tell me I am totally overthinking it and it will be fun Sad

Christ, I went Xmas eve and was sweating my arse off! I ended up stripping down to leggings and a tshirt Grin

Echobelly · 29/12/2021 20:31

I'd suggest not jeans - if you fall over and get cold and wet, they'll take ages to dry out! Not too warmly dressed/heavy a coat, you do get warm fairly quickly when skating about.

I'm thinking about this as we're going on Friday (outdoors). Will probably wear non-jean trousers and a light sweater under my winter coat.

mygrandchildrenrock · 29/12/2021 20:32

If you’re not skating fast, you’ll be cold and I would wear a coat, and gloves. If you get hot there are usually chairs/benches/tables to put your coat/jacket on.

We did but it was outdoors. DS took his coat off and I was boiling but had to carry his coat 🙄. Most females, including me, has on leggings, thick socks and a hoodie or shacket.

flakeymcflakeface · 29/12/2021 20:33

Haha I do remember that much, def not jeans!

Leggings and a jumper, with a long sleeved top on underneath, does that sound about right?

yes youl have super fun! I wore jeans but didnt fall over. Gloves and a coat is a good idea, especially for dd. But dont worry you will be moving round and round and it wont be that long a session and it will be fun!

Troublesometooth · 29/12/2021 20:36

Remember gloves, if you fall it stops your hands getting cold and wet.

I wore stretchy jeans (didn’t fall) warm jumper and a warm bodywarmer. And gloves and hat. Any more and I would’ve been too hot definitely.

If you used to skate a lot when young I doubt you’ll fall over, it’ll all come back to you after the first 5 minutes.

By the way we went to one of the pop up rinks and they did have a cloakroom to leave bags etc.

minipie · 29/12/2021 20:39

Oh yes thick socks would definitely have been a good idea!! Toes were freezing

HeidiHaus · 29/12/2021 20:55

Double socks, thin layers under coat, waterproof gloves if you have them!

flakeymcflakeface · 29/12/2021 21:08

Great, thanks all! Have revised outfit accordingly! Going for normal leggings, vest top and jumper and thick socks! Dd will be wearing tights, leggings and a jumper with a long sleeved top on underneath.

Why do I overthink this stuff?!

Another friend went recently and confirmed they are using the old blue skates with red laces, that I remember from the hire skates over 20 years ago... I have got my old skates from the same era, but they need sharpening and I would look like a massive twat when I go arse over tit upon merely stepping onto the ice Grin

And gloves OP!

and I’d take a hat or extra layer personally, I’d have been too cold in what you describe even when moving on the ice - and if you’re going with dc there will be bits when you are helping them so not keeping warm moving.

Just reporting back, had an absolute blast, dd loved it and it was nice to discover I still remember the basics Grin

Was BOILING!!! Ended up in just a jumper, all coats/layers etc discarded after half an hour!

Nope. They took out the only ice rink in the whole of North Wales and turned it into a vaccination centre. They've put the leisure centre back (was a covid hospital) but retained the vaccination centre until at least March. DD misses it immensely.

Off the point - but we're bitter!

I was going to say that you need to layer up. She's usually cold when we arrive, then only wears a thin, long sleeved running shirt with thin runner's gloves as she gets very warm quickly. Glad you enjoyed it OP.

Starbrand · 30/12/2021 20:56

Glad you had fun! I went today too! Like many other have said i got hot and sweaty! It was a great work out! We are planning to go again on NYD my son loved it and i appreciated the exercise

Nhytfdetykbcz · 30/12/2021 21:35

Yes it's odd but you do get hot.... I love ice skating. Great fun.

PaperMonster · 30/12/2021 21:45

Have you any waterproof pants?

wineandchocolateforthewin · 30/12/2021 21:50

I wore dress and leggings with a cardigan and coat, was bloody roasting, did not need my coat!
