Teenage orthodontics - private cost estimate

Hi all, my DD is 13 and the practice we were referred to have confirmed the waiting list for NHS treatment is 18 months or so, so we have decided to go private (and for a couple of other reasons also).

I have assumed £4k or so for the treatment cost - is that realistic? I know she'll need full "train tracks" for at least 2 years.

We have an appointment later in the moment but Im just pondering need to know how much we need to save....

Possibly slightly less. For full train tracks in metal (rather than ceramic) it would be just over £2k at my orthodontist if you are under 18.

Serafinaaa · 29/12/2021 20:00

It would also be available on 0% finance if that helps spread over 1-2 years

JealousOfDDsOodie · 29/12/2021 20:03

@Serafinaaa - thank you.

She's happy to have metal - apparently that's the fashion now?! Things have changed since my day!

I just wanted to make sure I hadn't underestimated it before our consultation so I can brace myself (excuse the terrible pun Grin) for the quote...

I paid £2500 for my son, he needed blocks to adjust his bite and now has train tracks. I paid up front and they offered 10% discount for that so actually £2250 but could have spaced out over course of treatment. You could also opt to pay more for white rather than metal coloured brackets but we didn’t do that

We paid around £4k for our son to have Invisalign and around £2k for our daughter to have train tracks. Permanent retainers were an extra £300.

Mizydoscape · 29/12/2021 20:05

The local well thought of orthodontist in our town charges £2250 for under 18s. We are in the South West.

Interesting - thanks all.

She's not bothered about Invisalign etc and is happy to have metal so that may limit the cost.

Sounds like it won't be over the maximum I thought anyway so that's good - and if cheaper, then that's a bonus!!

I think we paid £2,000 - DD had train tracks and had them off about a year ago. She enjoyed choosing the new colour for the wire each time.

Depends on so many variables. Depends on so many things: what treatment is required (will he need a removable appliance before having a fixed brace? Extractions?) what materials will they be? (Ceramic or metal), even if he will need both arches treated or just a sectional? do you want Invisalign if he's suitable? Then would that be it a lite case or a full case? Does the cost include retainers? And even your location will affect how expensive it will be. Best thing to do is just have a consultation which will be specific to his treatment needs and preferance. I do think £4K is plenty though.

@allofthecheese - some great questions to make sure I cover in the consultation, thank you

We've just been quoted £3500 privately - that's for train tracks. Back to NHS waiting list we go...

RaoulDufysCat · 29/12/2021 21:27

We are in London and DD has had the works, including a MARA brace and a Hyrax jaw expander plus train tracks. Total cost around £4500, si I think just train tracks would be a lot cheaper.

Trufflesandwine · 29/12/2021 21:45

I’ve had 2 kids with braces in the last few years- £4000 and £4500, worth every penny in my book, to see them with perfect teeth. Neither had particularly difficult or prolonged treatment.
They each got a spare set so 2 retainers each, replacements will be £200.

My youngest daughter had massive issues. It's been less than a year and it's amazing how things have changed (nhs) happy to p.m she's almost 16

Try looking at Total Orthodontics. They have a fixed price offering for under 18s. Was around 2k
