Parking commercial vehicles on residential street

Google isn't helping me so thought I'd ask the vipers. Neighbour runs a business from home, (sub contractor or franchise or something), basically a well known delivery company. Has 4 vans as well as their personal 2 cars. Every day drivers turn up, leave their cars on the street all day and take the vans out, vans are parked here all night. 2 of the vans are currently broken down and haven't moved for over a month, one outside neighbours house and one further down. Neighbour has been asked to moved them and promised they were being towed away weeks ago but still haven't moved.

Anyone know the legalities of this? Vans are taxed and mot'd. Parking is an absolute nightmare and we don't know what we can do.

There aren’t any legalities about parking a vehicle that has tax and MOT on the public highway. People sometimes need planning permission for change of use if they are running a business from home, but there the council will usually adopt the test of whether the primary use is still as a home.

Covenants may not permit running a business from home but I don’t believe you can prevent anyone parking in a public road.

GrendelsGrandma · 29/12/2021 18:23

The legalities are that you don't own the road. Any vehicle can be parked there so long as it's got road tax, MOT etc.

I can see it's annoying but that's how it is. The council could ban parking on the road entirely if it wanted to.

Not much you can do I'm afraid. If they're taxed & insured, local council & police won't do anything. 😶

You could try complaining to head office if it's a big umbrella company? I had problems once with a van guy who was parking so that I couldn't leave my gate. I spoke to his boss (small ish local business). And it stopped. Worth a shot.

Btw you can check MOT status online using the reg number

This.

I had the same with someone who was keeping their liveried van outside my house and driving their car to and fro each day. It was legally parked but their rules said the van should be parked legally in a well lit area and not causing inconvenience to residents.

It's so annoying. We have RAC van, Thames water, Pimlico plumbers and amey large vans always outside our house! They are used by people in another road but as their road is tiny they park in ours. Nothing we can do about it, I often have to park in another street... the companies pay tax so not illegal just annoying!!

BoodleBug51 · 29/12/2021 19:02

We own a commercial van but have no parking at our business premises, so we've had to pay £500 for a commercial permit meaning we can park anywhere in a designated zone. All of these are streets are residential, and we get daily abusive notes left on the windscreen and it's also been vandalised.

MargeSimpson00 · 29/12/2021 19:29

I feared as much, very annoying battling to park with 6 vehicles from one house but if it's legal what can I do! Company is huge so not sure if anything to gain by contacting them but I suppose an email won't hurt.

I can't imagine it's illegal, as our local post office sorting office parks all its vans on a residential street, I feel so sorry for the residents!

BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2021 19:43

Potentially there might be a problem with their insurance as you often can’t park commercial vehicles at your home address over night, they have to be at the business address or designated secure location.
