Logistics questions

2 bed house.

DD will be 5 when the baby arrives, she has her own room which isn't particularly small but won't fit her full single and a cot. Baby will be in with us in a side sleeper for the first 6 months or so. With DD we then put her in a cot in her own bedroom but as we can't fit a cot in the other room we can't do that.

We were thinking the best plan is to put bunk beds in DDs room, she will be fine on top, but when can younger DC be put in bottom bunk? I'm going to need them in our room in a proper cot from 6 months to 18 months or so aren't I?

(I know this is particularly exciting but I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this logistical issue so appreciate hearing what others did) Smile

Could you fit your bed in the smaller room and put the children in yours?

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 28/12/2021 09:29

Don't put all the lats on the bottom bunk and stand a cot inside...

That was my first thought as well. Or a midi sleeper that can fit a cot underneath as an L shape?

We were in a two bed until dc were 10, 8 and 18 months.

We had dc2 in with us until about 6 months, when he was reliably sleeping through then swapped bedrooms. Dc had the very large double, we had the smaller double. It just made much more sense, we use our room for sleeping, they had miles more stuff to store.

Then they had bunk beds at ages 6 and 8 when we knew dc3 was on the way and dc3 went in with them at 6 months too.

Is swapping possible?

You can get bunk beds where the bottom bunk is practically on the floor. Also means the top bunk isn’t too high.

I'd plan to keep the baby in with my until c18 months (which is what we did) which makes night feeds and waking etc easier then as other have said they can be moved to a low bottom bunk, and I'd add a bed rail for them also

*with me (cot in our room)

Had considered cot under high sleeper but wondered about circulation and safety?

And with the very low bunk beds, what age would be safe?

Could look at swapping too.

Thanks for suggestions!!

I used a high sleeper and put a cot for DC2 under it in similar circumstances. It was fine for the first few months but did get tricky when DC2 started crawling around and was able to climb the ladder and try to throw herself out of the high sleeper. The solution I found was to remove the lowest run from the ladder (DC1 could still get up and down ok) There was room for the cot, which later turned into a child bed with the sides removed, and also a bookcase under the high sleeper, so it was better than bunk beds (more space efficient)

Thanks, this is a good thought.

Am also thinking that, actually, I can fit a single and a cot but would just have limited space for other furniture. Perhaps could do that and if DD is in a mid sleeper can fit furniture under her bed...

I keep coming back to 'how old does a DC need to be to go on a very low bottom bunk?' Any thoughts?

Different situation but DD was on a mattress in the floor with me from 6 months. I bought long wedge shaped foam bumpers which went under the deep sided fitted sheet. She was fine in there on her own for the few hours between her bedtime and mine. You would need to think carefully about things like ladders and headboards baby could get head or limbs stuck in though and I was just fortunate that DD was a late crawler/walker so didn’t bother trying to climb off over the bumpers until she was much older.

Re when they can go in a low bed - both my kids were acrobats who learned to climb out cots before a year so got moved to beds as it was safer for them. I don't think there's much risk of injury from falling out a low bed, especially if you put a spare douvet or blanket alongside it. Mainly it's a pain if your child won't stay in bed though.

IKEA kura. Baby with you till you are ready for them to sleep on an extra thick mattress on the floor and the older one will be in the top bunk.
