Simple chapter book recommendations for 9 year old boy please?

After I got some fab recommendations on my thread I’m asking for help for my son now please :)

Really stuck trying to find things for him. He is 9, very very bright, but although he speaks very good English he only speaks it with me. He goes to school in another language. This means that his vocabulary isn’t brilliant (try as I might, I am only one person!) and he has struggled with Michael Morpurgo as there are so many words he doesn’t know. Unfortunately this also rules out (for now) a lot of my childhood favourites written in ‘older’ language, such as CS Lewis.
I know this will improve the more he reads, but I don’t want to put him off.

So please could I have some simple chapter book ideas? Books he has read and enjoyed include:
The Sheep Pig - Dick King Smith
The Twits and Esio Trot - Roald Dahl

He could read Horrible Histories but found them too gory (which didn’t surprise me when I read them too!).

He’s very keen to read but I’m running out of ideas!

Thank you.

The How to Train your Dragon series is great for this age group

Rainbowqueeen · 28/12/2021 06:48

The 13 story treehouse series

Diary of a wimpy kid
Captain underpants

My son is slightly younger but he loves the wrigglesbottom primary books. They are easy to read and quite straightforward .

Other ideas, What about secret seven or diary of a wimpy kid?

I loathe David Williams but my DC enjoy his books, currently reading code name bananas and enjoying it. Also likes the horrid Henry books and the David Badieal kids books.

I was going to suggest How To Train Your Dragon or the Treehouse ones, but I see people have got there ahead of me. Paddington might go down well.

The Sam Wu books are great "first chapter books", aimed at probably 7 year olds. And the same authors (Kevin and Katie Tsang) have also written a series called dragon mountain which my 9yo is obsessed with - the story is much more involved, but the language is still pretty accessible I think.

We are in exactly the same situation! I'd say it's important to set aside time for him to read aloud to you so you can explain any words or ask him if he knows what the words mean.
Barrington Stoke do books aimed at children with difficulty reading. I'm not saying your son has, but they do books with an older interest age, but lower reading age which I've found are great for this situation.

Books we've read are
Famous Five
Christmas Pig
Toto the ninja cat
Jack Beechwhistle
Usborne readers - the longer ones like Titanic,
Dangerous Animals etc
Train to impossible places
Witches Vaccuum .cleaner and other stories

English is also our minority language.

Captain underpants was a huge hit.

Beast Quest series
Tom Gates

Also my DS likes non fiction. He adores science/dinosaurs/natural world so he s got a lot of books in English on those subjects. Its not chapter books but it got him reading.

To reassure you, mine was a very weak reader then suddenly took off when he was nearly 10. He s now read all of the Harry Potter in English which I never imagined he d do aged 10.

Flat Stanley, mr gum as well as ones already mentioned, how to train your dragon, 13 storey treehouse, tom gates, diary of a wimpy kid

Nailsbythesea · 28/12/2021 08:17

Mr men (lots of interesting words but simple book) etc

I would never usually recommend Harry Potter, but it would be perfect here as the language is so simple. Book 1 is at grade 3 level

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/12/2021 10:20

Other advantage of harry potter is if hes seen the film he knows the story. And then gets lots of rich additional information from the book

Bugbeau · 29/12/2021 10:27

My just turned 10 year old has loved many of the ones suggested, also he’s enjoyed in the last year:
The Bad Guys series (very simple with pictures but funny)
Jack Beechwhistle books
Ultimate Football Heroes & Unbelievable Football (if he’s a football fan)
Marcus Rashford You are a Champion
Fortunately The Milk
The Boy at the Back of the Class

I would say these are all pretty accessible although the boy at the back of the class covers some tough subjects!
