Jury Service and loss of earnings

What am a missing?

DS1 earns quite well for his age, over minimum wage, but not as much as the average adult salary.

He's been called for jury service and won't be paid anything by his employer (I know some do pay, but his doesn't) so he needs to claim loss of earnings.

The rate for a 8 hour day day is £64. Less than minimum wage. For half a day it's less and if they don't need you, nothing.

But he has had to tell the employer he won't be available for any shifts for two weeks so even if he's not used, he won't be able to work - the shifts will have been given to someone else.

So, if he is used for a full day for two weeks he will be out of pocket and "earn" less than minimum wage. If they don't fully use him, much less than that.

DS1 lives at home with minimal expenses, it's not the end of the world, but for someone on a similar income with a family it must be a disaster and well paid people will lose a fortune.

Or have I got it all wrong?

Op I wouldn't be able to do it either because if I don't earn on the shop floor there wouldn't be any money to go into the business.

I've never understood how they think people will manage but then I guess the people that set the rates probably don't have to budget

You don't get a choice?

It's completely ridiculous, as is the amount they cover for childcare, it's only a couple of pounds per hour. I can't remember what all of the grounds for deferring it are, but I thought financial hardship was one of them...
