Lovely people of MN please help with where we can go on holiday in the summer.

I have two DS one teen one almost teen, both like to hibernate with their computers but do also enjoy being outdoors once I get them out the house! We are in central Scotland but happy to travel - any suggestions of what we can do / where we can go for a week that would give us lots to do? Thank you in advance!

Aviemore area is a good option

MamaEs · 27/12/2021 12:18

Lots to do in Wales. North Wales has the zip line and south west wales has fab beaches

SheWoreYellow · 27/12/2021 12:18

Yeah. There’s lots of rope walk things and quad bikes. Book before you go though.

We had a great week in the Isle of Wight with my teen ds. He had a great time! There’s loads to do although it’s a long way from Scotland!

Longdistance · 27/12/2021 12:24

I wanted to come on and say IOW, but you’re in Scotland, so quite a distance unless you stop over on the way.

Alton towers area. Theres a waterpsrk nesr by and lots and lots of walks in the peak district.

hels71 · 27/12/2021 12:25

We stay near Whitby with my teen DD

Justkeeppedaling · 27/12/2021 12:25

Lake District - lots of boating type of activities and you could probably book them lessons in sailing or canoeing.

Or Cornwall and surfing lessons.

YesThisIsMe · 27/12/2021 12:27

Places we've enjoyed at that age: Ironbridge (walks, industrial museums, RAF museum)
Snowdonia (mountains, outdoor sports, mines, beaches)
Dorset (fossil hunting, beaches, tank museum, monkey world)
York for a short break by rail ( ghost walks, railway museum, general atmosphere)
London

We did a canal boat last summer with DS who had just turned 17.

It was always going to be a gamble as it was a replacement for a family holiday off a lifetime to India. We had an amazing time, helped along by the liberal application of meals out and stops for ice creams and pizzas Xmas Wink

It allowed him to be fully immersed in the holiday as there's a lot more to do on a canal boat than I had ever imagined!

I was going to say Edinburgh…went for the first time this year with my teenager and he loved it!

SheWoreYellow · 27/12/2021 12:40

Sorry, that was referring to aviemore!

If you want to stay in Scotland, I'd say the East Neuk of Fife - there's good cycling, Blown Away kitesurfing in St Andrews and (for the brave) the Elie Chain Walk easyways.com/elie-chain-walk/

If further the Lake District, if they're into football, this is where the England football teams train (but is also a hotel with really good sports facilities) and it's near Alton Towers www.hilton.com/en/hotels/emabthi-hilton-at-st-georges-park-burton-upon-trent/

Auntpodder · 27/12/2021 12:43

Of course, if Scotland supporters, then staying at the England team hotel may be torture... Shock

postitnot · 27/12/2021 13:39

Whitby is lovely, there's surfing at Scarborough and mountain biking in Dalby forest nearby

North Wales has lots going on, beaches and mountains and trampolining/zipwire/surfing

Aviemore is also lovely

I love a UK holiday!

Boysnme · 27/12/2021 13:45

Thanks all, loving the options! We’ll definitely head down south as have done quite a few Scottish holidays - fingers crossed we get a bit warmer weather too!

Smile neither of the kids like football much to my DHs dismay!

My two like forest holidays, large lodges, private hot tub and forest walks, been a few times now.

MillicentFaucet · 27/12/2021 13:57

Definitely the Lake District, loads of places to hire boats & paddle boards. There's a Go Ape place but this is more "WOW" if they've ok with heights

Another vore for Wales based around the zipwire.

The other thing is to focus on your passion, whatever it/they is/are. Teenagers can suddenly surprise you how much they take notice of you enjoying things. One of the most amazing experiences of my life was taking ds to Macbeth at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Bafflingly mixed reviews for what was an astounding production. But ds not only enjoyed it, he took note of the fact that I was literally shaken to the bone by it.

Turkishangora · 27/12/2021 14:01

We had a brilliant time in Whitby last year with x 2 teenagers. Also enjoyed the lakes, good idea to pre book all the activities.

happychristmasbum · 27/12/2021 14:14

York. So much to do.

Scotlass · 27/12/2021 14:19

If you are happy to travel we had a brilliant week in Dorset last summer. Stayed at the campsite at Durdle Door and visited Weymouth and surrounding area. We split the journey half way down and had an overnight outside London on way home for HP studios.

Boysnme · 27/12/2021 16:30

We did York last year, it was amazing! Could be tempted to go back!
