Tax rebate help

Landof · 26/12/2021 20:38

Due to the nature of my (employed) job, I've several employers and have started and finished a few jobs within the last 2 years (hard to explain without outing myself but the nature of the industry means some jobs are part time and temporary but all employed)
Within this time period I have overpaid tax on several occasions whilst HMRC wiggle my tax code around. I'm not the most clever online and usually have to ring them up and they then make sure I'm on the correct tax code.
I'm owed a rebate for at least the last 18 months, I tried to get it before and they said to call the end of the tax year which I did. They said they have to give it to me via my payslip but that means my employer forking out my rebate (it would then get taken off their tax bill) but it's a lone employer and money they wouldn't have hanging around.
Years ago I was given a rebate sent in the post as a cheque but they keep saying I either have to do through payroll or I can claim online but I can't find anywhere online at all that I can claim this rebate, does anyone know?
It pisses me off that this is my hard earned money and I've spent hours of time calling them and trying to get what I'm owed. I'm giving up hope but could really do with the money now especially with energy prices going up.

Please can anyone help?! I just want my money!!

Submit a tax return for the tax year that ended Apr 21 before the end of January 22 then you can get a tax rebate for the 2020/21 tax year.

Thanks, I assumed this was only for people who are self employed, is this not the case?

I am so clueless which is why I always call them up. Is it too late to also claim for tax year ending April 2020?

Then as soon as 21/22 tax year ends beginning of Apr 22 submit a tax return for that tax year and your get a rebate for any over paid tax for that year.

Anyone can do a tax return. Agree that's the easiest way.

I think you can submit for 4 years to recover overpaid tax. Also you could try this:

www.gov.uk/claim-tax-refund

Using the on-line services is the best way (in my experience) to interact with HMRC. Set up an on-line account with them and go from there.

Have you got an online HMRC account? I logged into mine, said I was due a rebate, hit the ‘pay me my money’ button and it was in my bank account within about 2 days.
You can do all sorts in there too, review previous years, check your NI is up to date etc, change taxable benefits. 100x easier than speaking to anyone on the phone

Thanks, this link I've tried and it just says 'as an employee it will go in your pay automatically' but it never does!

Yes I do have an online account. I've never been able to find that on there though!! I'll have another look now. Thanks. Any idea exactly where it is?
