DD ‘clicking’ herself all the time - this isn’t normal is it?

My dd is 13.
From the start of the day and throughout she is always clicking her joints. She says that unless she frees herself this way she is in pain/discomfort until she ‘clicks’. She will click her neck both ways, her upper and lower back, hands, feet, ankles, knees etc. She twists and turns until she get relief. You can hear a loud resounding click when she does it.
I have often wondered if joint hyper mobility (maybe even EDS) runs throughout my family as I have many issues as does my dm and grandad had problems too, my ds often has dislocation of his knee but no gp or even a paediatrician took it seriously.
Does anyone else have dc who have to click all their joints? Is this a normal thing? I have no idea!

19y dd does this all the time, has done for years. I hate the sound - it really goes through me!

Watto1 · 26/12/2021 16:52

I used to do this. Used to drive DM potty. Fingers and ankles mainly. I don’t do it now. I guess it was just a habit I grew out of. Although now you’ve mentioned it, I’ve just given my ankles a good click!

SergeiL · 26/12/2021 16:56

My DD does this. She actually has arthritis but this is nothing to do with clicky joints apparently. Her consultant is completely dismissive of them being an issue.

My fingers and wrists sometimes need to click and until I do it there is an uncomfortable pressure type feeling there. Ive been told clicking in joints is air in the joints and does them no harm. We also have hypermobility in the family but it was diagnosed after other more noticeable side effects

ShirleyBadass · 26/12/2021 16:56

Yeah my DD is awful for it. I do it a lot with my big toes which feel stuck and rigid if I don't!

I can also crack my chest bone, spine and hips after a good yoga session which feels amazing!

DroopyClematis · 26/12/2021 17:01

I do this , collar bone, fingers, neck.
Always done it. Doctor has no problem with it.
Don't do it all day though, might do fingers a few times.

OGenkiDesuKa · 26/12/2021 17:02

I do this. My joints feel stuck too if I don’t.

UsernameTaken76 · 26/12/2021 17:06

I do this with my wrists. The physiotherapist I saw for my carpal tunnel said it was a touch of hyper-mobility but wasn’t too worried about it

RedPandaWanda · 26/12/2021 17:09

Oh good, I’m glad it looks like it’s quite normal. She’s obviously just one of those ‘clicks’ types!

I love a good click!! I can never do it though. How disappointing Xmas Sad

Violetroselily · 26/12/2021 17:13

I'm also a clicker. Feet, ankles, wrists and fingers throughout the day.

Turtletotem · 26/12/2021 17:14

My 13 year old also does it but she's realised how much the sound annoys me and says I'm just leaving the room to click then comes back when she's done. Being a teenager she doesn't want to keep getting up so my theory is that she doesn't do it as much therefore if it actually damages the joints it's reduced. Grin

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 26/12/2021 17:15

Me and my brother do this all the time and we are far from teens!

m030978 · 26/12/2021 17:20

I used to be able to click most joints (only when they needed to 'go'), doesn't work so much these days.
13yoDS is the clicker now, I honestly think his head's going to fall off one day!

He's slightly hypermobile too, so probably connected.

BuffyFanForever · 26/12/2021 17:21

I did this for pain relief from join pain as an older child/ teenager. I still have joint pain and dislocate easily as an adult. Went to drs many times to try and discuss joint pain etc and was fobbed off. When I went for an emergency C section the anithstatist noticed right away and said I had EDS. Worth pursuing if your daughter is in pain.

Hairyfriend · 26/12/2021 17:23

It doesn't sound normal at all! Maybe the odd finger click if I stretched 1st thing in the morning, but to stand there and NEED to click ALL the various parts of her body you mentioned- does seem very odd. And to get pain if she doesn't relief the click is strange too.

What tests did you or your parents have to check for hypermobility or other disorders? Does she have any other concerning symptoms? Have you done the quiz on your DD or yourself?

Totally normal for my DD to do this, her back mostly.

Oblomov21 · 26/12/2021 17:40

Ds1 does this. I hate it.

Notmrsfitz · 26/12/2021 17:47

2 of my 3 sons were like this - both did have hyper mobility.
Apparently it’s air or something in the synovial fluid?? Does no harm, won’t cause arthritis and temporarily dies ease a slight discomfort but it’s very much a short lived relief that otherwise would go anyway.

This is what a rheumatologist told me years ago !!

Son, now 21 still clicks, involuntarily these days !!

icedcoffees · 26/12/2021 17:49

I do this daily, otherwise I feel stiff and sore.

I can't help it most of the time, my joints click and crack when I stand up, stretch or move.

BeLessMe · 26/12/2021 17:50

I need to have my back clicked by DH. It’s like a painful buildup when it needs clicking, the relief when he does it is amazing.

I used to need to do my fingers and toes as a teen but did wean myself out of that. Probably because I got moaned at endlessly for doing it so often.

scoobydoo1971 · 26/12/2021 18:10

I do this now, unintentionally. I did this a lot as a kid. My son does it too, and you can hear his knees clicking rooms away. The noise is escaping air, usually. We have Ehlers Danlos syndrome. I can only suggest finding the Beighton test online. It is only one part of a diagnosis, but a good starting point. If it is Ehlers Danlos syndrome, it is very important to be under specialist rheumatologist care. I wasn't diagnosed until 45, and I have some very bad ligament and bone damage, as well as vascular issues, that have developed into a very serious situation as a result of late diagnosis. I've had four surgeries this year alone and the doctors are trying to persuade me to have toes amputated that have twisted and become necrotic from lack of care over the years. I took my son to a paediatric rheumatologist privately as it proved hard to find the right person in the NHS.

Atmywitsend29 · 26/12/2021 18:22

I do this all the time (I'm 29) sometimes it's intentional for relief, I feel tight and pain and the clicking feels better, mostly my shoulders, spine and neck, but sometimes my pelvis aswell.
Alot of times I click unintentionally, my feet, knees, hips, pelvis, spine, neck, and shoulders all click when I move.

I've no idea why, but my DS clicks randomly too.
Im scared I'm going to sound like a bag of rice Krispies when I'm old! Grin

None of us have had any tests, I stumbled across EDS a few years ago due to googling help for digestive issues that I suffer from. Upon more googling I started to link several symptoms from myself and my mum/grandad. My mum has many issues and has been in pain for most of her life. I have tried the Beighton test myself at home and score 8. GP just tells me that many people have some degree of hyper mobility!
