Do your "people" cook from scratch?

My mum did and I do mostly. If I have people round for a buffet, things like quiche and sausage rolls, cake are homemade. If it's for dinner it won't be particularly exciting, but I'd do a homemade chilli or lasagne, something easy to prep ahead and feed lots of people..

Among my friends no one cooks, to the extent that it feels pretentious to do so. They are all generous hosts, but everything will be from a packet or they'll suggest takeaway pizza or similar.

I worry that my cooking seems like showing off and also (sometimes) wonder why I bother!

I always cook from scratch, but that does include using Knorr ready made stock and JusRoll puff pastry.

I've never had a ready meal that I liked, there's something strange about the seasoning and many have a very strong aftertaste which I don't like.
Take aways are out as we live in the sticks, but we have an Aga so I do a lot of stews and casseroles and curries. I tend to make big helpings and freeze half so I always have something in the freezer for when I CBA.

I cook all my/our meals. I have ASD and like to make, say, 5 x green soup or 5 x red soup, then big salads when alone, and when DCs are here, I find pleasure in cooking them healthy meals. Not sure if it’s “from scratch”, I used tinned tomatoes and I don’t make my own pasta 😆 We rarely eat cakes & biscuits but I make those if we fancy them.

I was with someone who didn’t cook and ate out or takeaways ALL the time & it was tiresome! I felt sick from all the rich food & became overweight from hidden fats & sugars & unjustifiably large portions - well I guess it was justified in what they were expensive! I remember with one takeaway, I could have fed us for a week 😁 He was morbidly obese. It was a grim time.

Luckily, I’m back on track and feel far healthier. By their definition, I can’t see how takeaways & ready meals can be healthy.

Well you assume wrong. As for making excuses, well no I wasn't. As I said upthread I can cook from scratch, but I find it boring so can't be bothered most of the time.

No shop? Then I refer you to my second point, which you ignored.

Also, I did say I respected honesty to say you can't be bothered. I just don't like people making silly excuses for why they "can't" do something so basic.

No fast food delivery as we are beyond the 5 mile radius of the delivery area for the nearest one so we don't have takeaways very often (twice this year). I don't understand why it bothers you so much why others don't cook from scratch, it's not like they're asking you to eat it. Some don't have the skills, other's, the confidence and ones like me that find it a bit of a faff.

Oh well, at least I'm not so arrogant as to assume that other people are just "making silly excuses for why they "can't" do something so basic."*

I grew up with two parents who screeched in the door at 6pm every night tired and stressed and would make us a curry with jar sauce, pizza and chips, spaghetti Bol or cottage pie that sort of thing. So by this standard not really homemade but not out the freezer every night. It's made me want to eat healthier as an adult.

I enjoy cooking and do cook from scratch where I can, I have a simple cookbook that doesn't require tonnes of ingredient's. It is hard as I have 2 young kids climbing up my leg when trying to do it so sticking a pizza in the oven would be easier. Those I know in rl who cook from scratch are thinner

I wish all these eager cooks would come and live at my house. Cooking is so boring.

I wonder if all the people busy making their own pasta, bread, yoghurt, cheese, stocks, etc etc all have nice big kitchens full of gadgets and appliances and sets of baking trays, pans etc
I barely have room for a toaster.
I have an allotment, I grow a lot of fruit and veg which surprisingly enough we eat. The fact that I don't make pasta and bread doesn't mean that we eat junk

We were brought up by parents who always cooked fresh food from scratch so we have learned to cook ourselves and it's no big deal. I will allow myself one evening of convenience food or jacket potato and takeaways on Friday night but also use You Tube for authentic curries or to perfect my own dishes.

thefatpotato · 27/12/2021 17:37

Would be considered weird amongst my friends to order takeout if we invited people around. The only acceptable thing to buy would be a baguette or maaaaaybe a fancy pudding.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/12/2021 18:28

I’ve learnt to cook though. I’m 57. Still bloody hate it.
