Food Bank Question

37 replies

XmasCrap · 26/12/2021 15:34

Yesterday, despite requesting no chocolate or alcohol, I received more chocolate and alcohol than I could ever want. 🙄

I know the food bank probably won't take alcohol but those light up boxes of chocolates from M&S - would a food bank take them or is it too late now after Xmas?

I'm pretty sure about 99% of raffle prizes are other people's unwanted presents!

I have no objection to having alcohol in the house, I just don't drink Prosecco or crappy Xmas baubles filled with gin. 🙂

I'd be perfectly happy to put it in the foodbank, I just didn't think they would take it because as a OP said, the poor aren't allowed alcohol! 🙄

I will check with our Co-op tomorrow & if they accept it it can go there.

The Olio app is a good way to give away unwanted food and drink (or anything else).
It's based on reducing waste, and I find the fellow users are more reliable than those on Facebook Marketplace.
I'm keeping an eye on it to look for unwanted gifts for my charity raffle.

Why not alcohol - how stereotypical is that!

For the same reason foodbanks don't take painkillers or other substances which require age checks or other faffy nonsense. It's not to protect the poor from booze, it's to cut down the paperwork. A 17 yo single parent could use the food bank but they wouldn't get gin!

"crappy Xmas baubles filled with gin. "

I think my snowglobe gin bottles are lovely Grin

It’s still officially Christmas until the 6th Jan (The 12 Days of Christmas) so why not?

@CorrBlimeyGG

Please don't give alcohol, and if you are going to send Christmas chocolates, please also donate some essentials. Food banks have limited supply space, and stacks of chocolate take up space needed for essentials.
Yes God forbid they get some chocolates after Christmas. It doesn't sound like OP has shelfloads to donate.

Treats like that are always popular

FreezerBird · 27/12/2021 12:43

The self righteous (all our clients are alcoholics and can’t be trusted with anything but beans) trussell trust will not

That's really, really, not why that policy exists.

You might know that your clients would like/be fine with alcohol in their food parcel but not all referring agencies do. Having a blanket policy means that the volunteers running the food bank aren't put in a position where they have to ask difficult or awkward questions of clients on pick-up.

Iwonder08 · 27/12/2021 12:45

Most people like it and will gladly take it. You can offer it to your neighbours.

Twentypast · 27/12/2021 13:23

@Obsidiansphere

Don’t throw the alcohol away! At the very least see if any friends or family want it.
Definitely this..our Muslim neighbours knocked on our door this morning and asked if we'd like a bottle of wine one of them had won in a work raffle.
