Money into wrong/disused account

My fault really. But still a bit pissed with dd who's 24. So she has a bank account it's not a well known one. Its called suits me . Anyway a few weeks back they contacted her saying there was some sort of issue and they would need to stop her account and set her up a new one. With new account number sort code etc .

Sometimes dd might pick Me up a bit of shopping. After I then transfer that to her bank one was for 30.00 one for 26.00 there have been a few others as well . The big one is I transferred 300 into her bank today. Only its not gone in. We then discover the smaller amounts have not gone in either(from a week ago) . It turns out I was paying it to her old account by accident. But dd did not even tell me the smaller amounts were not going into her bank . I don't get how she did not notice her income is very low.

I thought if an account was no longer in use it bounced back to me. But it has not. Not the 300 and not the smaller amounts from a week ago.

Is there anything I can do Sad

The bank it was sent to will likely have it in a suspense/holding account. You will need to contact your bank to do a trace on the payments to find out where the money is

Sparkai · 25/12/2021 21:59

Your dd will need to contact the bank that it has gone into and request it back. As pp said it has probably gone into a holding account, but I think it needs to be the account holder to sort it, not you.

And also, you can be a bit annoyed at your dd, but for a bank account to be dormant it usually needs not to have been used for a number of years, perhaps you need to tidy up your online banking?

An incorrect payment will almost never bounce back. The bank will say it's your responsibility to make sure you are sending it to the right place

I understood it perfectly. Perhaps @PorkSprinkles has comprehension issues? OP I'd suggest chasing your own bank - they might be able to retrieve it in these circumstances.

No, its the sending bank that has to do the trace not the recipient

I Thought I would have to contact my bank as it came from my account?

Surely if her bank closed the account and issued her with another. The old account should not accept money / it should reject it. Im not sure how it works though

Are you sure it was a legitimate change of account and not a scam?

Her child benefit went into her account ok. So I guess it must be.

It either bounces or goes into a holding account. I did it recently with £2k luckily it bounced. Your dd needs to contact the bank.

MiniatureHotdog · 25/12/2021 22:11

I transferred some money to myself in a rush the other week to a savings account that I closed a couple of years ago Blush I contacted my bank on live chat and they said leave it 24 hours then ask them to pursue it. But I didn't need to as the recipient bank bounced it back overnight.

Like pp said is she sure it's not a scam?

dementedpixie · 25/12/2021 22:11

No, the OP needs to contact her bank as she sent the payment

Theremoresefulday · 25/12/2021 22:11

You need to contact your bank when it opens - try the telephone banking option first because the branches won’t be open til Wednesday.
