.. was the kind of Christmas Day trauma I really could have lived without.

Fuckkkkk.

My husband was amazing. I’m still very teary and shaky from the shock. DS is happy as anything and chomping down ice cream. Hoping I manage to enjoy the rest of the day! 😬

Oh no OP you have my sympathies, this happened to me with my DS who is now 9. The panic was unbelievable. I went on to do a paediatric first aid course as I was so scared it happened again. You'll never forget but your LO will move on happily like they didn't just traumatise their parents! Haha

Massive unmumsnetty hugs (( ))

He's fine. All is good Flowers

My then 4yo choked on a lollipop at a school fete. DH was away in America with work, I’d taken my kids on my own. I was nervous about the lollipop and then it came off the stick. It was horrible, he was clutching at his throat, and going red/then blue. My instinct kicked in and I started literally beating him on the back until it dislodged. Then had to deal with the parents staring at the lunatic whacking their kid at the school fete. He was fine, but I was wobbly for a couple of days after. Be kind to yourself.

Did she choke with sound or without sound? If you couldn't hear her choking and she went blue with no air, make sure you call 111. There is a small chance that something went in to the lungs and that can cause infection. If it was choking with sound, she should be ok.

How scary for you all.

Happened to me with a piece of lamb and I saw my life go in front of me. Still remember it now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/12/2021 16:16

You poor bugger.

So sorry.

BackBackBack · 25/12/2021 16:16

OP have a huge hug. It's bloody scary when it happens but they are fine which is the most important thing.

I choked on some food a few years back. It was absolutely terrifying because I couldn't speak and DH kept shouting at me that I needed to tell him what to do (he panicked). Fortunately he twigged and gave me the Heimlich maneuver and all was ok, except for a very sore throat for a few days where I'd scratched it trying to claw the food out.

A friend of mine did a paeds first aid course and swears by it - might help to reassure you that you know what to do if it happens again?

SnarkyBag · 25/12/2021 16:18

Oh my worst fear. I actually have a thing about bacon and choking having seen my sister choke on it as a child. I can’t bring myself to serve my kids pigs in blankets even though they are teens.

So glad your little one is ok. Totally understand you feeling shocked and teary.

mumofEandE · 25/12/2021 16:23

When I was 12 my 10 year old brother choked on a ham sandwich- it was just me and my Nan at home.
I did the back slapping / heimlich / may have tried to put him upside down then rang 999 as he was turning v pale / blue
But as we were giving details it came out
But since then I have always been v scared of choking - when my D.C. were babies I didn't like feeding them when I was alone in the house - and I still cut up grapes (DD is 16Blush)

Thanks all! He didn’t go blue, I don’t think it was fully constricting his airways, my husband pulled it out. He’s so lovely and resilient though, running around now without a care in the world. If I wasn’t pregnant I would be very very deep in the port now!

That's so scary Op, but he's ok and that's the main thing! Try to relax and enjoy the rest of your Christmas Day.

If there was no back slaps or abdominal thrusts, it doesn't sound like choking, it sounds like your DH got in there in the nick of time! It's bloody horrible to witness isn't it?

My son choked on a sausage when he was 10. His eyes went wide and it was absolute silence apart from him standing and pointing to his throat.
The fear in his eyes didn't leave me for a long time.
I had to give him an abdominal thrust a few times before it dislodged.

15 now and still won't eat sausages!!

I'm glad you're all ok. Flowers

How scary ,Op my son choked on a chicken nugget in McDonald ,s when he was about four,he has severe autism and used to over fill his mouth ,my husband managed to dislodge ,but honestly thought we had lost him I wasn't there, the main thing ,is your son is fine try not to dwell on it
I also saved my dad from choking to NBA sprout at Xmas a few years ago ,I had had a few glasses of wine so was very calm and did the Heimlich maneuver which worked first time thankfully .

RonniePickering · 25/12/2021 19:30

Oh God there's no panic like it 😩
Glad he's ok Xmas Smile

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 25/12/2021 19:33

My eldest chocked on a bit of satsuma when he was about 2. Noisy choking, but still horrible. Very firm back slaps did the trick, but it definitely shook me up. I'd done a few first aid courses by then, thankfully.

An adult I know choked to death eating her dinner last year. Her husband had left the room and gone to wash up, by the time he came back she was unconscious and died before the ambulance got there. Made me scared to eat alone for a while.
