I’m a mother of 2, late 30s.
My kids and DH don’t get me anything but this truly doesn’t bother me.

My DM & DS do but they are notoriously bad at buying gifts (no thought, utter tat, occasional regift)
This is what I got:

Size 14 peaky blinders pyjamas (I’m a size 10 and I have never seen the show)

A matalan black pleather hand bag (I have never used a hand bag in my life)

A gigantic woolly itchy looking tartan scarf

Tesco 5 pack of knickers in various ugly patterns

A bottle of Prosecco (I famously hate Prosecco, I call it pisseco and I don’t even drink and form of wine)

I know some may say I’m ungrateful but the level of thought and effort I put into searching for and buying gifts for everyone and I get shit every year.

Bah humbug

A hand knitted bag with a set of needles and cottons (think Poundland brand)

I have so much brand new needle-crafting stuff that I'm selling my excess off (and this person knows it)

They are rubbish, thoughtless presents. Very bizarre.

You just need to do a list, and send to all - including your husband. No excuse for any of them then.

My mum got me the m & s beauty advent calendar for Xmas, tbf she has done this for a couple of years & I haven't the heart to tell her and I do like it.

It makes me chuckle she hasn't clicked it's an advent calendar. This year my nephew bought me one as a thank you gift, so I got to use it as an advent calendar, so now have 2.

A few years ago she bought me a measuring jug, that was a funny shape, quick Google turns out it's a glass urine jar for men. Whilst it was new and not my only gift I couldn't bring myself to use it. My teenage son finds it hilarious as he gets fantastic gifts.

DH bought me perfume.
It's not even a perfume I've ever said I like. He bought me perfume the last 4 years in a row and I've got a shelf full of the stuff.

It's not the cost, it's the lack of thought. It's like he went to get some painkillers on Christmas Eve and thought, that'll do.
After 22 years together you'd think he would have a clue. I have hobbies. I even have an Amazon wishlist. I spent weeks looking for things for him and our two teens (who I didn't get so much as a card from).

It's making me question our entire relationship and marriage as its another indicator of how little he can be bothered to do anything nice or I would enjoy.

For my birthday one year my brother got me a blow up boyfriend that was all of about 2 foot tall. I propped it up on the dining room chair opposite me so i didnt feel such a lonely sad singleton. It started giving me some really dirty accusing looks one evening so i popped him and put him in the bin. Job done !!!

Oh good Lord @Sconeface

Sconeface · 26/12/2021 16:28

I would love to say it's a one off but same thing last 15ish years from in laws....

PermanentTemporary · 26/12/2021 16:33

I didn't even know you could still get those... or are they priced in shillings??

milly74 · 26/12/2021 16:41

Sadly most of mine are candidates for the charity shop but the giver has been thanked and hopefully will never know.

Sconeface · 26/12/2021 16:41

I've a suspicion one of them may be a time traveller?

@GinGenie

About 6 months ago our doorbell broke. I casually mentioned to DH about replacing it with a Ring doorbell, but he poopooed the idea completely (and quite vehemently actually) so I said OK and bought just a regular standard doorbell replacement. Never thought about it again, never mentioned it again. Guess what he bought me for Christmas. A bloody Ring doorbell. I do not need 2 doorbells. Plus I'm a SAHM so if I want to know who's at the door I can just open it.
That's the perfect example of treating a partner as part of the furnishings. Not cool.

My ex’s mum once got me a road map of Essex (didn’t drive, live anywhere near Essex or have any plans to travel to Essex)

This is on a par with the Peaky Blinders pyjamas. Maybe worse as the pyjamas would be useful in an emergency.

AntsDeck · 28/12/2021 18:47

We have had in-laws here for 5 days, again. They don't bring anything towards the food or drink, not even a crumb.
We gave them thoughtful gifts, carefully chosen as to what they like and wrapped beautifully too.
They gave us plastic bin liners, full of free tat - think items given away with kids burger meals and free samples, etc.
They are leaving tomorrow.
Never. Ever. Again!

Atmywitsend29 · 28/12/2021 18:51

I got a pack of 3 pairs of socks from my SIL.

And that's it...but they are star wars socks so I'm pretty happy Grin

Byeckythump · 28/12/2021 19:35

I got a family organiser calendar. To organise my wife work presumably.

Not completely hideous I know but it’s not exactly a gift just for me is it? We already use one that runs for the school year, I buy it from the joint account because to me it’s family stationery just the same as new ink cartridges or staples would be.

DH meanwhile got nice personal gifts, of course.

Duckswaddle · 28/12/2021 19:49

I had to watch my BIL’s girlfriend open a cool hygge band, nice body and bath stuff from Neals Yard and some other bits from my in laws. I got a makeup bag. That pretty much sums up our current relationship. Fucking hate them all. I’m excluded from all sorts of invitations and events during the year, I always find it interesting to see what passive aggressive shit they can find for birthdays and Christmas.

Duckswaddle · 28/12/2021 19:50

Last year was a shitty flimsy see through scarf thing. I’ve never worn one in my life and wouldn’t know what to do with it.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 28/12/2021 21:00

Not this year but one year my ex DPs parents bought me scented binliners!!!

Chimley · 28/12/2021 21:14

@GregTheEgg

There should be a SwapShop thread on here for people to swap their unwanted gifts Grin.

I have not-so-fond memories of my mum in tears about a “shit-brown” jumper my dad bought her one Xmas after she’d expressly said no clothes!

There is!

I just got earrings and a plant from my sister. I don't wear jewellery and having a running rift with my dh as he loves plants but I see them as clutter.
My mum gave me a book she loved. She loved it so much I had already bought it for myself and don't like it. And 2 scarves. Every year she gives me scarves. She can't ever have seen me wear them. Because I don't wear scarves. They make me feel trapped.

Chimley · 28/12/2021 21:26

DH got 3 (to be fair brand new) brown bath mats from his DM. Our bathroom is a funny layout and does not have room for 3 of these things. And not in that colour. The good news is they were wrapped in a carrier bag which had the receipt in it.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 28/12/2021 22:04

10 pounds of hard frozen ground beef (mince) wrapped for the freezer.
A vinyl recording of Christmas music (I don't have a record player.)
