Turkey drama

Help....forgot to get the turkey out until last night. Still frozen solid so we've popped it in water this afternoon and had planned to leave in kitchen over night to finish off, it's in a vaccum pack but I've just noticed when changing the water that it's got inside the pack..... do I need to abandon this and nip to tesco quickly before 4pm? I don't want to kill anyone tomorrow!

It doesn't matter, it will be fine. It really doesn't matter if your turkey gets wet. What's the worst that could happen?

NOELnoelNOELnoel · 24/12/2021 15:11

It will be fine.

What time are you cooking it tomorrow? Its got ages to defrost overnight.

TripleTipplePipple · 24/12/2021 15:14

We were going to put it in at about 830am I think. Its 4.5kg and its had 2 hrs ish in water now. Do you think I'd be better just taking it out and putting it a cool room now for the evening?

Thank you both for replying so quickly!

Ours is 7kg and we forgot to take it out until this morning 😬 it's currently sitting in a tray under a heater hoping for the best and that it will be good to go at 8.30am tomorrow. May be wishful thinking and we will be recreating scenes from the royal family trying to defrost tomorrow morning 😂

MalbecandToast · 24/12/2021 15:25

I'd buy another one personally as I stress about food poisoning a lot. But if you don't worry about that then stick with the water and hope for the best!

MrsPnut · 24/12/2021 15:28

I brine my turkey anyway so it really doesn't matter about getting it wet, I'd take it out of the wrapper and put it fully in the water with some salt, sugar, spices, oranges and herbs. May as well go all in.

TripleTipplePipple · 24/12/2021 15:34

@MalbecandToast I have a tiny back up Turkey and a load of pigs in blankets and trimmings just in case Smile so if all else fails I might have to do that one. It was half price in tesco this morning.
@MrsPnut I've never thought about putting straight in water with anything else? Wont that affect the meat?

newtonsthirdlaw · 24/12/2021 15:35

Brining a turkey makes it super moist and succulent so I wouldn't worry about it getting wet.

Add a handful of salt, some citrus peel, pepper and bashed herbs and leave it overnight in the fridge.

Tickledtrout · 24/12/2021 15:45

And make sure you've removed the giblets bag from the cavity. That will be frozen solid and not helping your cause.
Your only real threat of food poisoning tomorrow is cooking a semi frozen turkey

Tickledtrout · 24/12/2021 15:46

Google Nigella's brining turkey recipe. Up and down the country thousands of chucks are bobbing in buckets of brine

TripleTipplePipple · 24/12/2021 15:49

Thanks all, it's still in packet and in ever changing water for now. I'll get it out once the kids are in bed and get brining, the giblets are in so I'll get those put as well

AdaColeman · 24/12/2021 15:50

Take it out of all wrapping. If it has giblets inside take them out also and put aside in the fridge to make stock for the gravy.
Immerse the bird in water, add salt, herbs and lemon etc, leave overnight in a cool room. All will be fine, don't worry! Wine Wine

DragonMamma · 24/12/2021 15:51

Was also going to recommend the Nigella brining method too. Water won’t hurt the bird in the slightest!

It's available on BBC iplayer. You need the New Sofa episode.
Xmas Smile

Are you doing soup with a twist as a starter? 😂

MrsDThomas · 24/12/2021 16:44

I got a fresh crown in tesco an hour ago for £9. All marked down. My crown is cooking away nicely and this cheap one will be cooked on boxing day if im low.

I always buy a marked down one on the evening. Morrisons had whole turkey’s half price at lunchtime.

So not too late! You could always freeze the emergency one

local waitrose giving out for free....mountains of them....but strangely, all chicken sold out a few days ago !!
MrsDThomas · 24/12/2021 17:19

Oh that’s kind of them. Better give them out free than waste them

plinkplinkfizzer · 24/12/2021 17:19

I don't know if anyone has mentioned yet .Do you have a fan ? It will work much better and safer than using a heater . The fast moving air speeds up the process . Good luck .

TripleTipplePipple · 24/12/2021 19:46

@PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets thank you! Going to find it and watch it tonight.

So, it seems to be ok. Just unwrapped it, took the giblets out (still like a block of ice inside....I've never done it before and never want to again....) husband is currently doing god knows what to it with bacon and foil but it mostly seems fairly soft flesh wise so it should maybe be in the fridge overnight or just left in the kitchen? The heating is off over night so it's not warm in there and we are going to shove it in the oven at 8am tomorrow.

OP posts:
MrsPnut · 24/12/2021 21:00

Leave it in the kitchen, in its bath if possible.
