Does anyone sell stuff on EBay?

Is it worth it? Do you make money?
I have to get rid of so much stuff & local fb sites are rubbish - people just aren't interested unless it's free. Yet I can't decide if EBAY is worth the effort. I have some nice things but not rare/in demand/designer etc

I'm a causal eBay seller - mainly sell clothes I've not worn or hardly worn - named brands work better for me like Boden and Hobbs. Just told some GHD curlers I don't use. I have a stack of grey plastic envelopes and bubble wrap and just post as soon as paid. You can print out prepaid postage label.

I do note that eBay promotes reduced seller fees at certain times and I need to get savvy to that

EBay used to be great. Now not worth the hassle for buyers or sellers.

Hold fire. People will be shifting "unwanted Xmas presents" toot.

I find it only is worth while if you have a very specific thing to sell which has a particular demand for it, eg. a branded baby sling, specific brands of children’s clothes (and only BNWT or in demand items of those); or otherwise something a bit niche or collectible. The cut eBay take now is large enough to not make it worth bothering for lots of low value items - you’re basically doing a load of packing and traipsing to the post office for tiny amounts like 50p or a couple of pounds.

I find kids’ stuff like toys and clothes tends to sell better on Facebook selling groups these days; or Marketplace. Even so, I think some things sell better on eBay; but as above, those tend to be niche or higher value.

I used to sell lots but as postage prices increase and eBay's slice got bigger, you need to have really decent designer stuff or happy to make pennies.

Worked out by time fees went out including PayPal something that went for a quid made hardly anything. If you don't don't charge straight postage as eBay take a slice of postage costs too so it can end up costing you more then you charge

If its clothes, you might want to try Vinted

I used to sell on eBay quite frequently - just outgrown baby/toddler clothes and equipment mainly. It helped pay for the next size up. I was a SAHM at the time, so I could fit in a couple of listings here and there.
My DCs are teens now, and I'm working full time - so, being honest, I can't really be arsed with it all. It's pretty labour intensive for a relatively small amount of financial gain, and I just don't need the money as much as I did back when they were little.

That said, I still hold on to their outgrown clothes if they're in good condition - force of habit really.
My money mad 14yo DS has recently taken up selling my backlog of stuff. I'm delighted to be getting rid of it all, as it was just taking up space.
DS has made £160 in the past 6 weeks, which he's thrilled to bits with - but that's required a fair amount of work that I just don't have the time or inclination for these days.

I do eBay every so often and have made a few pounds over the years.
In the Summer, I had a huge clear out and took it took it all to a car boot sale. I paid £10 for my pitch and my friend and I made nearly £300. I doubt I'd have got anywhere near that on eBay.

GirlOfTudor · 23/12/2021 00:29

I've done eBay for over a decade. I have no luck with Gumtree and a bit of luck with larger items in Facebook. I cba with 5am wake up calls for a carboot. Love eBay. Some things go for a surprising amount, others a modest amount. Anything that doesn't sell gets donated ☺️

If you know your stuff you can still make a profit on Ebay OP. It's not what it was years ago, but, I make money on everything I sell. I know my market though, and. I do a lot of research. It's time consuming. If you want any advice inbox me

Thanks all - tbh reading these I think it may be more effort than it's worth. Will try Vinted for clothes & maybe a car boot - did one years ago and loved it although the early start is a killer!
