Got my newphew has had a cough for weeks. AB last week, got him overnight and constant coughing bless him.

Does Vicks on feet work?

Has he been assessed for asthma? Night time coughing is very often a symptom of asthma in children.

DigitalGhost · 22/12/2021 21:14

Second the asthma comment.
My DD was the same and improved massively after being prescribed an inhaler.

SortCode · 22/12/2021 21:15

Coughing on and off for a month but all the kids at school are the same, bugs and viruses etc. Stopped now but was coughing during day as well. Just want him to have a peaceful night

My daughter has asthma and always coughs at night, she's four too. A dehumidifier helps, an extra pillow to keep her upright and a couple tablespoons of honey a few times a day as well.

Mol1628 · 22/12/2021 21:19

My sons have both had this cough too for ages.

Sleeping propped upright a bit , just another pillow would be enough
Plenty of fresh water to drink
Window open a little for fresh air.
Hot Bath before bed to loosen congestion
Vicks on back and chest

Malhao · 22/12/2021 21:19

My six year old has had the exact same issue

I try not to give her over the counter meds unless absolutely necessary so my go to remedy is hot milk and a teaspoon full of manuka honey

She hates but it does seem to help

Malhao · 22/12/2021 21:20

Can I ask is it a Flemy cough or dry cough everyone is experiencing?

SortCode · 22/12/2021 21:21

Bit of a runny nose but dry coigh

Same 🤔

Don't think lock down and social distancing is helping kids immunity to be fair

Covetthee · 22/12/2021 21:45

A teaspoon of honey before bed should help ease the tickle in the throat.

Blossom64265 · 22/12/2021 21:51

Honey.

Try having him breathe through a straw. It relaxes the throat muscles that are in spasm.

christmaspop · 22/12/2021 21:55

PP mentioned a dehumidifier but I think they meant a humidifier.
You want the air to be humid it's helps so damp towel on a radiator will also do.
Also make sure the child isn't too hot as that definitely makes a cough worse.
Good luck

Ive put a damp towel on the radistor

my ds was the same at that age, an inhaler really helped

WoodenReindeer · 22/12/2021 23:42

Cough variant asthma. Always flares with a cold here

boomboom1234 · 22/12/2021 23:56

I use the calpol plug ins when my daughter is like that. She has mild asthma and it definitely helps her. The scent is lovely and helps clear the nasel drip I think. Also calpol in the night if coughing badly.

hannsmum · 23/12/2021 00:08

Exact same hall it's my now 4 yr old DS

I always sleep 2-4 hrs a night

Been assessed for asthma nothing!

Drank loads of jars of honey , calpol plug-ins, ginger

Vicks on chest everyday

Vicks on soles of feet

Sometimes all these helps sometimes it doesn't

Just fed up

He snores which makes it worse and "activates" the cough at night

I feel so bad for him 🥺

WoodenReindeer · 23/12/2021 03:32

How badly does he snore? Have you considered sleep apnea? My (same child 🤦🏼‍♀️) slept so much better/stopped snoring when she had tonsils/adenoids out.

Has he had his tonsils and his adenoids checked if there enlarged it could be a reason why he's snoring and not sleeping properly

Yea went to Paediatrician who said he has large tonsils

But said the NHS are not doing those procedures anymore now unless it is really urgent

He said he will outgrow it

I even showed him a video of how bad he snores

AntiHop · 24/12/2021 01:35

Could be winter allergies. I have to take antihistamine and beconase to keep mine at bay.

WoodenReindeer · 24/12/2021 07:31

Hannsmum did they do a sleep study? We were fobbed off a bit until we had an overnight o2 reading (a clip on oximeter on her toe overnight) and then they suddenly wanted to do it really soon due to her keep dtopping breathing being the reason she kept waking.. (sleep apnea.) They wouldn't do it for reoccuring tonsilitis/other associated issues but did for the sleep apnea/which caused the waking.

I must admit I was so unimpressed with the way I was treated up til then ("another mum that wants tonsils out" why would anyone want an operation?! We'd gone to find out after it had been suggested to us...)

WoodenReindeer · 24/12/2021 07:32

I completely get that advice may have changed in the last 6 years/ since covid though. The lack of sleep/constant broken sleep is unbelievable though. Many people don't "get it." Hope you have some help around you x

isntitobvious · 24/12/2021 09:48

@sortcode my ds had a dry cough on an off for years before I realised it was triggered by eating and drinking (to be fair, he was a constant grazer, so almost any hour of the day could be just after eating and drinking - though I had got as far as noticing he didn't seem to be coughing much at school or overnight). Eventually we got a diagnosis - dysphagia - he has a slight delayed swallow, and needs to eat more slowly to avoid irritating his throat. Once he knew what it was he was able to manage it (though by this time he was a teenager).
