If you don’t celebrate Christmas or don’t do much for it, what do you do and why?

Just that really. I’ve never been particularly interested in Christmas, I loved it as a kid of course and then when I got to my teenage years and beyond I found it all quite boring. I’m not entirely sure why but possibly because I don’t come from a close family. We aren’t the sort that sit around chatting, laughing and playing games etc. After moving out I used to go to my parents who always host dinner but the past 4 years I have stayed at home and I will again this year. The past 2 years and this one I haven’t even put up any decorations or done anything ‘Christmassy’. I only did it prior as it just seemed like the thing you are supposed to do. It will just be me, my partner and our dogs indoors on the actual day and it will be pretty much like any other day. I am making a roast dinner of sorts but we don’t do presents or anything. People always find this so weird when I tell them. What do you do if you also don’t do a traditional type Christmas?

We are very low key here...we put a tree up on the 24th, it is pretty and we enjoy it, then I take it down on the 27th or a bit later if I can tolerate it. We eat whatever we fancy ..this year the children have voted for spaghetti Bolognese...we give presents because I enjoy it really and never wanted the children tonfeel different. But really for me it is just going through the motions. Pre children I had a good few Christmases on my own, then just me and my now husband, where we ate beans on toast and just relaxed . For me Xmas is just a few lively days off work where we are all four of us together with minimal stress. I have no expectations about recieving presents and we just do what we like for a few days. No family around to worry about.

We go on holiday! DC have stockings and we may have a nice meal but we will be somewhere warm, and it's not very christmassy. Really suits us. We usually have an early December weekend with my family, sometimes traditional food, sometimes not, and we have a tree depending on when we're going away. I can't bear the commercial nature of Xmas anymore, the stuff in the supermarkets for weeks on end, the constant organising people do and the amount of pressure they put themselves under. The general over indulgence and pointless spending. I don't hate cosy fires, fairy lights, mulled wine, etc - for me that doesn't need to be on Xmas day, but anytime in the rest of the winter. Hate all the fuss over one day.

I normally do my tax return.
