I have a very rare break from work for 2 weeks and I plan to do naff all!!

I need a book to read as otherwise I will be glued to Mumsnet the whole time!

I don't have the most intellectual standard of reading books and I'm not a reader. But I need something to chill me out as I have had a very busy and hard year. I need to switch off desperately.

I used to love Sophie Kinsella books and have read most of her books including all the shopaholics books and some others.

I can only seem to read books in the first person.

I'm mid forties now so will don't fancy anything too young or super girlie.

Can anyone recommend an easy read in the first person.

I like stuff that is true to life, no sci fi etc.

Have you read Marian Keyes? ‘Rachel’s Holiday’ is one of my favourites - easy reading but a great story.

Thank you. I've not read any of hers. I shall look at that one thank you.

Go into a charity shop, buy anything with a glittery cover and 'snow' or 'christmas' in the title. There are dozens of extremely silly chick lit ones out there. You can flick through to see if it's 1st person or not.

Kate Atkinson has done a series of detective novels. Very easy reading but because she's a great writer they are also very well written. Can't remember all the titles but one of them is called When Will There Be Good News which seems quite appropriate for now hahaha.

StolenMadonna · 21/12/2021 18:25

Oops just seen you need them in first person sorry these are not.

RightOnTheEdge · 21/12/2021 18:28

Four Minutes to Save a Life by Anna Stewart is a nice, easy read OP.

I've just finished the Mrs Hudson Mysteries by Martin Davies. They are told from the point of view of Flottie who is the housemaid but she and Mrs Hudson are integral to solving the mysteries. A good twist on Sherlock Holmes.

Definitely Marian Keyes, Rachel's Holiday is one of my favourite books, it's just brilliant.

You'd probably like Trisha Ashley too, try the Twelve Days of Christmas, very seasonal and easy to read, and first person too. Super cosy!

TheOpportuneMoment · 21/12/2021 18:43

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is a nice light read and would fit the bill!

TinaWeymouthsBass · 21/12/2021 18:55

The Thursday murder club by Richard Osman is an easy and charming read and if you enjoy that there's a sequal called the man who died twice, both captivating.

Manteo · 21/12/2021 18:58

Was also going to say Thursday Murder Club.

Margo34 · 21/12/2021 19:05

Dorothy Koomson, super easy reads

meecrowahvay · 21/12/2021 19:29

Anything by Taylor Jenkins-Reid. Really easy reading (kind of read like a film). I enjoyed The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo but Malibu Rising was good and has topped a few lists this year.

Seriously79 · 21/12/2021 20:16

The Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer.

LethargeMarg · 21/12/2021 20:26

I'm really enjoying ghosts by Dolly Alderton it's easy to read but has really well written characters and places

ShirleyBadass · 21/12/2021 20:28

Jill Mansell - funny and lovely and easy to read.

AnimalTheDrummer · 21/12/2021 20:37

Landline by Rainbow Rowell is lovely. It's set at Christmas time too, bonus. Easy to read but very well written too.
I second Marian Keyes and her book Rachel's Holiday is great. There's a sequel due out soon too. Rachel's Holiday is one of the 'Walsh sister' books, there's a few and they're all great.

morningstruggles · 21/12/2021 20:41

I love the Sophie kinsella books so much! I have read the shopaholic books so many times.

Can't remember if these are 1st person or not but i also love Paige Toon's books (specifically Lucy in the Sky or Chasing Daisy). They are really addictive page turners that are easy to read Smile

Shouldofgotahamster85 · 21/12/2021 20:49

Rose garner mysteries by Denise Grover swank easy reading and addictive lots of spin offs etc she does some other easy read series so have a browse Smile

LadyCleathStuart · 21/12/2021 20:57

I also love Sophie Kinsella (can you tell?)

I would also say Marian Keyes however her books do tend to have a darker edge to them, although they are hilarious.

I also really rate Hester Browne, the Little Lady Agency books are brilliant.

LadyCleathStuart · 21/12/2021 20:59

Oh also Mandy Baggot but they are not usually written in the first person.

AyeOop · 21/12/2021 21:05

Anything by Sue Townsend , very funny and easy to read

StruggleStreet · 21/12/2021 21:09

The Hunger Games and Divergent series are first person I think and are nice and easy to read.
Gone girl is a good one too.

fucketyfuckwit · 22/12/2021 09:33

Lovely! Thanks so much for the recommendations!

I will go to a few charity shops today to see if I can find any.

DH has the Thursday murder club so I may pinch it off him if he doesn't read it.
