How has Amazon got my new card details?

I just went to order something from Amazon, and when I got to the screen where I could choose a card, there was a new card available. My current debit card is due to expire next month and I haven't received the new one yet (or possibly I have but haven't opened the envelope yet, DH tends to 'tidy' the post before I see it), but somehow Amazon have the new card details attached to my account already. I've checked my online banking and it is definitely my new card, and nothing untoward has happened in either my Amazon or bank account, but it is bloody wierd and freaking me out a little. Any ideas how this has happened?

Have they got it from a linked account like kindle, audible or Alexa?

Thebathneedscleaned · 20/12/2021 21:16

Has DH added it?

Do you have it set up on Google or Apple pay?

Have you used it for other things online and have it saved to auto fill?

Yes, if you have a rolling subscription like Prime, your bank will roll it onto your new card details automatically.

I have never seen this new card, so it has never been added to anything by me. The card number matches the card number showing in my banking app though so it is definitely my new card. Just checked the post spot and there is no unopened post for me, and DH hasn't seen anything arrive. I do wonder if maybe it's gone to an old address but even if that's the case, how would they have my Amazon account details, and even if they did, why would they add it to my account instead of their own?

Ah OK, that makes sense, thanks! Very freaky and Big Brother-is (although also quite helpful!) though.

My card numbers always stay the same, just the expiry date changes.

ProudDada · 20/12/2021 21:20

My new card has the exact same number as my old card, just a different expiry date and 3 digit code.

It's really bloody irritating but yes it's a thing, can't quite work out from a work POV how okay it is that we've started automatically charging cards that expired 2 years ago. Is it something to do with the new 3DSecure v2.0

NothingIsWrong · 20/12/2021 21:23

ApplePay does it as well. The couple of times I've lost my debit card and reported it, it's immediately disabled in ApplePay as well, but both times the new details have updated there well before the new card has arrived.

Super useful if I'm honest!

definitely don't often misplace my card

Yes Apple Pay did it to me as well, new card added before I got it, however this didn’t happen with amazon for me anyway I lost my card recently but I had to add the new one to amazon myself.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 20/12/2021 21:26

If you have a new card coming that you have not received yet, then there is literally no way it's on your amazon.

It needs to be manually added by the customer or if you call, through a private non recorded section of the call that the agent can't hear. ( we have buttons etc for this on our system) there is literally no way.

So your card was added to your account, then it's someone you know, or it's the same number and you have to update the expiry. My card number never changes when I get a new one.

paradisebythedashboardlights · 20/12/2021 21:35

Mine updated on Amazon and Apple Pay before I'd opened the envelope.

Apple Pay I can kind of understand, but I was surprised it was automatic on Amazon.

I wish it did it on Asda as I somehow lost my Christmas slot booked before my card expired at the end of November!

Insidelaurashead · 20/12/2021 22:35

I work for a credit card company so I can answer this one. Amazon, and lots of others that do recurring payments (such as Netflix, Spotify type stuff, not saying these two specifically are but they could be) are signed up to the Visa updater service, so they automatically get your new card details when your card is stored as a payment card on your account

Ariela · 20/12/2021 23:57

This is why I automatically delete the card details and cancel the Prime subscription after using the Amazon free offer,
