After bills etc how much spare money do you have a month?

Things are a bit tighter than usual since I had to drop some hours.
At the minute after bills /food etc I have around £350 a month spare money.
Does anyone have any advice on how to possibly earn a little extra ?
I've seen people talk about surveys online?
Is this genuine ?
And how would I go about signing up

There are threads in the money matters bit called earn 10 pound a day, those are pretty good if you're looking to earn more money on the side.

What do you do for work? Any scope to increase hours? Promotions? Are you constrained to particular hours because of DC for example?

StruggleStreet · 20/12/2021 19:54

I have £2000 and DH has £1000 spare. That’s all about to change though as moving to bigger house and both DC to go into nursery full time as I go back to work. So we’ll have about £500 each spare which is probably very reasonable but doesn’t feel like a lot in comparison to what we have now.

I’ve tried surveys and stuff in the past. I think the money you earn from them isn’t really worth the effort, took me a while to figure out that I was better off spending my time and energy focused on a qualification/work.

What line of work are you in and what are your prospects for progression?

After bills I have nothing. Maybe a fiver if I'm lucky.

Comedycook · 20/12/2021 19:59

Does your £350 have to pay for food?

tvvvg · 20/12/2021 20:00

No food isn't included it's just spending money but I think I'm feeling it more as I used to have a lot more spare every month

Nothing!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 20/12/2021 20:01

I have about the same as you, but that's because I've just had my bathroom, boiler and central heating and my kitchen done and paying £300 a month of that loan. It's enough for us but I am concerned about the upcoming fuel increase.

RoastedParsnips · 20/12/2021 20:02

About £5 if I'm lucky. Yay cost of living going up. Sad

OldTinHat · 20/12/2021 20:03

I have nothing left either. I do some surveys online and yes, they do pay, but you spend half an hour doing one for 11p or you start one and then get thrown off.

After mortgage, bills etc I have £200 a week to spend on everything including food, petrol and everything else. It doesn't go far with 3 kids and not a hope in hell in being able to save up for a holiday or shy thing like that. However I feel like we're just about comfortable and I am very good at bargain hunting ( charity shops, discount cards and all that are a big part of my life 😂)

Iamanicepersonreally · 20/12/2021 20:29

Probably about £600 after bills, food etc

Sparklespangle · 20/12/2021 20:35

Absolutely nothing, with food and energy bills going up so much we are really struggling. We can get through Christmas but then we need to sit down and seriously budget.

OliveOyster · 20/12/2021 21:17

£4

bettertimesarecomingnow · 20/12/2021 21:29

Between us about £3000 but then we have very few bills - soon will change once we build our house tho!

tigerbear · 20/12/2021 21:36

£2,700

Morgan12 · 20/12/2021 21:42

1788 between two of us.

PositivelyFooked · 20/12/2021 21:43
  • something.
Tiramesu · 20/12/2021 22:21

That's loads. Nothing, every pound is accounted for.

Wester · 20/12/2021 22:23

We manage to live of my husband's income and save mine.

I find it is easier to cut down on spending rather than earn more.

Cheaper mobile/broadband/TV. Smarter about food shopping/ lunches.

Bulk cook meals and save leftovers for soup/curry/hotpots.

£350 is plenty spare though. Maybe try keep track of what you spend that £350 on and just adjust it each month, did you buy a Starbucks? Try McDonald's next time etc...

alexdgr8 · 20/12/2021 22:25

none. get £67 a week.
hoping my savings will hold out.

MatildaIThink · 20/12/2021 22:34

How much other people have is irrelevant, what matters is can you survive on what you have.

Earning more money is always an option, but so is cutting back on costs where possible, getting cheaper deals on services and subscriptions you have etc. Unfortunately the government have again killed the hospitality industry so that fallback is gone, however some of the supermarkets where I live are still recruiting if those hours could fit? I also have a friend who does call centre work from home some evenings.

jocktamsonsbairn · 21/12/2021 08:06

Nothing 😞 I hate the dread every month coming up to pay day. I'm a teacher so I do tutoring to help support my dc at uni but that's been ad hoc due to covid.
I should be able to live off my full time salary but it has to support 3 adults and 3 households so it's impossible despite my student dc both working part time and getting student loans. It's crap.
