Christmas cake disaster!! Anyone care to add their own moan...?

My dad's Christmas cake has gone mouldy in the week in between last feeding it and today 🤔

Ours was made the same day, has had the same treatment & been stored (wrapped up on it's own) in the same place 🙈

I can't decide whether to make another (have everything but fruit in the house, but Lidl is only ten mins away) or apologise for this year being a disaster 🤷‍♀️ (I'm swaying towards "fuck it" but I think that's because we've had a bad day & I'm feeling very fed up atm)

There's no point to this post other than a huff & a moan if anyone wants to add their own!

On reading the title, I was going to say Mum's went mouldy one year! Don't know what she did cut off the mould and served it on Christmas day before binning it knowing her

helpfulperson · 20/12/2021 17:00

Lidls sell very nice ready iced Christmas cakes.

OrangeSyringe · 20/12/2021 17:01

Cut the good one in half! Feed the mouldy one to the birds.

If you make one now, freeze it till it is solid and then defrost it, it will have aged significantly. You still have time to do that then marzipan and ice it if you do it today/tomorrow.

HollysBush · 20/12/2021 17:07

😆 dog ate half of ours of the kitchen counter (she lived another7 years). I cut of the edges marzipaned and iced it. But it was just nuclear family, not guests.

Grumpyosaurus · 20/12/2021 17:08

Or don't bother with marzipan and icing. Just brush it with (warmed and sieved) apricot jam and arrange lots of halved walnuts and pecans and glace cherries on the top, and then brush with more jam.

Saves a lot of time, looks great, fewer calories.

dubyalass · 20/12/2021 17:08

Oh god, I need to go and check mine now! I made it in late Nov and my dad will be very disappointed if it's gone furry.

dubyalass · 20/12/2021 17:09

Although like @InTheLabyrinth's mum, my dad would probably just cut off the mouldy bits and eat it anyway. I'm also now wondering where the fuck I put it... Confused

DuesToTheDirt · 20/12/2021 17:19

Mouldy? How is that even possible? Confused

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/12/2021 17:32

Buy a posh one. They are quite nice.

lucysmam · 20/12/2021 17:34

@DuesToTheDirt not a clue 🤷‍♀️dd1 was as surprised as me! It was most definitely going green and furry though Xmas Confused

Thank you for the suggestions; I'll probably buy fruit and bake again. It's just annoyed me (probably more than it should have!)

I sympathise with mouldy cake - missing mins Christmas cake this year…normally hate Christmas cake (and I do actually hate hers. Soz mum.) But spending Christmas alone and missing the usual things!

I lovingly made chicken stock today to make risotto with on Boxing Day. Didn’t put anything under the strainer and poured it down the sink. I’m bereft!

lucysmam · 20/12/2021 18:36

@IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece I've done that with stock before - totally gutted! I get what you mean about missing the usual things; maybe that's partly brought on the grump here.

Mine isn’t mouldy, praise be. It does look raw though, which is Confused given that it was in the oven for nearly four hours. Anyway, marzipan on, will ice it tomorrow.
