Induction hobs .............

007Stocko · 20/12/2021 15:49

So........ moved house just over 12 months ago. The kitchen has built in appliances and includes an induction hob. Not one of my pots and pans were compatible so cost a fortune in buying new.

I don't find it as easy to cook things as I did on my gas hob - is it just me?

Oh, and what's best to clean it with?

Love mine, I had it put in when the kitchen was done.

Love mine. Thought I'd hate it but dh persuaded me. Quite irritating that he was right about it.

I clean mine with one of those scrapers and soapy water. When it's all sparkling clean about annually it looks beautiful.

Its a piece of piss to clean, just wipe over with a wet cloth, dry it with a tea towel if you want it shiny

Not sure why it cost a fortune to buy new pots, I got a set of stainless steel form Sainsburys/Argos (I like the silicone lids) for about £50

You have to play with it a bit to get the settings right. Dont use P if your frying bring it up gentley

I love the ability to set the timer to switch off. I'm not a good cook and dont like standing over things...so if I'm doing boiled eggs I start them off get them on a rolling boil then set the timer for 9 minutes..job done

I also love that you can put a tea towel/cloth under a pan so if it does start to boil over it wont go everywhere..... just bloody magic

Love mine, much better to cook on than gas.
As pp said, the ability to time and turn off is fab.

rubyslippers · 20/12/2021 17:12

I’ve switched from gas to induction and wish I’d done it ages ago

I used hob bright to clean it and buff with dry kitchen roll - no fiddly gas burners to clean

It’s controllable and quick

My pans were cheap from Amazon …. Love it and won’t go back to gas

Shedmistress · 20/12/2021 17:12

Interesting.

I recently moved and have a gas hob in the new place, whereas I had induction hob in my old house.

Id rather have the induction hob for anything except stir fries. They are the only things that really benefit from the lick of a flame.

Every this evening, getting the pasta to boil took ages whereas with the induction hob, the water was boiling within a minute.

Oldraver · 20/12/2021 17:13

Ah the 'P' might be something different on another brand, it's the highest setting

I love mine but not happy it chipped when a glass worktop saver slid into it..I keep looking ta the chip and inwardly growl

InTheLabyrinth · 20/12/2021 17:15

Hated ours. Although knowing the landlord it was the cheapest in existence.
It was painfully slow, switched itself off at every opportunity, beeped everytime it didn't like what you were doing, and was pants at frying.
Very glad when we moved out and had a gas hob again.
I'm usually in the minority not liking them too.

PriamFarrl · 20/12/2021 17:18

I love mine. Changed from gas about a year ago now. I didn’t need to change my pans. I find it as responsive as gas but able to go higher and lower in temperature. I can have stuff on a slow simmer now which I couldn’t with gas, I couldn’t get the flame small enough.

I’ve got a p button too. It’s great for heating up super quickly.

I think this is the thing. Cheap ones are crap. There isn’t much difference in the quality of gas hobs but a cheap induction is never good.
fussychica · 20/12/2021 17:25

Love mine and I'd been cooking on gas for about 30 yearsGrin.
Cleaning, just hot water followed by drying with an ecloth for a sparkling finish. Have never used any chemicals or a scrapper on mine. Only ever used a scrapper on an ordinary ceramic hob.

These days there are way more suitable pans available than when I got mine. Most supermarkets now have an induction range so shouldn't be too expensive.

I loved the P setting.

The water is boiling before the potatoes are peeled.

Flipping marvellous

Following. We are about to re-do our kitchen and trying to decide whether we went a gas hob or induction.

I find induction as responsive as gas, faster when you need it and can also go much lower heat. What do you find difficult about it?

So easy to clean too, wet sponge or cloth and its is done. Ours is 8 years old now and still looks like brand new.

007Stocko · 20/12/2021 18:08

It seems to be a decent make - De Dietrich - but from what I have seen I think the kitchen was fitted in 2013 so it's an older one.

I don't find the controls very good, always seems to be either too high or too low even with only taking it up or down 1 setting.

Because it works on magnetic pulses it splatters far more than on gas thus constantly having to wipe it clean (and yes I do use lids when I can).

I just found my previous 5 ring gas hob far easier to use, plus I had the wok ring in the middle.

I love mine but dh hates it and he doesn’t seem to have got the hang of it.

Change it if you don’t like it. Life’s too short for kitchen stress.

Macaroni46 · 20/12/2021 20:17

@InTheLabyrinth sounds like mine! The constant beeping drives me mad as does the constant turning off!

reluctantbrit · 20/12/2021 20:35

We got ours. 5 years ago, moved from gas, and I would never go back.

yes, new pots were an investment but we bought the same set we bought 20 years prior and hope they will last again that time frame.

The only issue I have is that I had to change all my glass spice jars above the hob to plastic after smashing the first hob when one glass jar. fell down. After all, the hob is just a huge glass plate.
