What tog duvet for a 5 year old when it's cold?

My little one's room is pretty chilly and he's only in 4.5. Feel bad, he needs an upgrade but I don't know whether to go for 7.5 or 10.5. Help!

Gosh, really?? Mine have 2 x 13.5. They throw one off if not a particularly cold night. They have 4.5 in the summer.

Pashazade · 20/12/2021 07:17

I'd throw a blanket on top, that's what we do, pretty sure DS has a 7.5. but cannot remember tbh. Blankets are much more versatile and saves having multiple duvets in the house and having to remember to change them.

VinoBianca · 20/12/2021 07:20

I know, I feel terrible! Like the sound of the duvet plus blanket

If they're in a single bed you can go up to a 10.5tog. Both mine still have their 4.5tog duvets on just now. Dd has fleece covers she pulls over if she's cold. Ds doesn't seem to get cold.

icedcoffees · 20/12/2021 07:24

Teddy bear bedding is great in winter too if you don't want to go for a duvet that's too thick or heavy.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/12/2021 07:24

You could get a 7.5 and use it with the 4.5 if he's still cold.

VinoBianca · 20/12/2021 07:24

Great advice, layering is key! Argh I feel so bad, off to do a shop now

DD won't use any form of cover at all. So she wears a set of thermal tip and long John, followed by a pair of pyjamas, followed by a onsie in a room that sits about 15 to 16 degrees at night. No covers at all. During storm arwen when we had no power or got considerably colder and she actually let me throw a blanket over her for the first part of the night, then slept on top of me for the second part.

Was he waking with the cold or complaining about it? Maybe he was ok with 4.5tog. Dont feel bad
daisychainsandrainbows · 20/12/2021 07:28

2x13.5?! As in 27 togs of duvet each? How do they even move? Confused

OP is your little one actually cold in the night? Small children can get very hot when sleeping and I'd go by how he feels rather than just the tog rating. My 2yo is wearing a vest and long sleeved pyjamas and is sleeping very happily under just a 4.5tog, although our house isn't particularly cold.

Layering up in the cold can be a better strategy for little ones than ending up with a huge, heavy duvet. If he is feeling chilly I'd pop a thermal vest under his pyjamas, put some warm fluffy socks on and stick a blanket over/under his duvet first and see if that helps.

dementedpixie · 20/12/2021 07:30

I dont even use more than 10.5tog on my bed and I'm in Scotland. Ds uses 4.5tog year round. Dd still has her 4.5tog but wraps in a fleece cover if she's cold. Have offered 10.5tog but they said no

I know! They are cheap supermarket ones, so I can only assume they're not what they say they are/not very good! They are definitely not too hot under them as I've just asked them again. Our house is cold!

m1shap3 · 20/12/2021 07:38

I'm not sure what tog it is but my 7 yo is in a paper thin one, and sleeps without pjs on otherwise he sweats.
This has been the same since he was 4

IamChipmunk · 20/12/2021 07:40

Both mine just have a 4.5 tog. Dd rarely sleeps under it and only sleeps in shorts/tshirts pjs, she gets hot at night. Ds occasionally likes a blanket over his but only on really cold nights (none so far this yr).

InTheLabyrinth · 20/12/2021 07:42

My 10 yr old is just under a fleece blanket. A 1.5 tog duvet is too warm. The 12 yr old has just moved up to a 4.5, and the 10,5 is on our bed now.
Dont go too heavy, but yes to layers. I'd probably go for 7.5, after checking if he's actually cold.

vinobianca · 20/12/2021 07:47

Thanks to those posters who've made me feel better! Yes he's woken saying he's too cold, but only for the first time last night.

We have a 4.5 all year round then add a blanket in the winter. Don't feel bad x

VinoBianca · 20/12/2021 08:06

Thank you, he did complain he was too hot once I'd layered him with dressing gowns!

DD (and we) have woolen duvets which regulate the temperature all year round. We like them as they are lighter than the thick duvets.

If it gets really cold we add blankets but then it has to be absolutely freezing outside.

DD is known for adding fluffy socks in bed as well but also sleeps in crop top and shorts in winter. From a certain age they tell you when it is. too cold.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/12/2021 09:29

Mine have never had more than a 10.5, we put blankets over the top if it’s really cold. Also hot water bottles.

As a family we run hot at bedtime though.

SBAM · 20/12/2021 10:11

My four year old wears long sleeve pyjamas (& always socks- hates having bare feet in bed even in summer) and has a 4.5 tog duvet and is always warm enough. She has a blanket in case it gets really cold, but her room doesn’t usually go below 17 degrees

ImFree2doasiwant · 20/12/2021 10:13

Out house us a cold draughty old ice box. Dc really struggle to keep a duvet on if it's too thick, so they have 7.5. Then they have vests, thick onesie, fluffy socks and a fleece blanket on top

trumpisagit · 20/12/2021 10:57

Kids don't need big duvets. I think onesie etc are likely to be more useful.
