DS is getting a haircut soon. Hair is currently past his shoulders. It's beautiful when it's washed and brushed (almost never) & wild, full of food/foliage the rest of the time. Looking for a cool shorter style but not a typical boys cut. Having it long is his thing - so jaw to shoulder length probs but more manageable. Sorry if this is a terrible explanation!! Just after pics I can show him in the hope he'll agree to one!

@TheOneWithTwoParties the 2nd one would be perfect for my son I think. 😍

@montymole

ah sorry I should have mentioned - completely refuses to tie it back! Otherwise I wouldn't have an issue. He suits it up and it keeps it out his face but I think our record is 5 seconds 😕
I hope he's home schooled then, as he wouldn't be allowed in science, DT, or games lessons with it down at all the schools I'm familiar with!

He's never been made to tie it up at school. Although I'm sure it's getting to the length where they would like him to. He has an SEN plan so they maybe make allowances for sensory needs.

@HairdresserMum

I was going to suggest just having a few inches chopped off to tidy it up, but if he won’t tie it back, then I agree, he needs a shorter cut.

You’re the parent at the end of the day so don’t be afraid to put your foot down if he’s not looking after his hair.

Tie it back or chop it off would be my rule in that situation.

Pick your battles

My son has hair like this, hates haircuts, now is halfway down his back

@haba

My ds didn't in science

With Bunsen burners etc? That is a serious fire hazard.

DS has the current style of OP's and uses a soft fabric sports headband to keep it off his face for PE.

It doesn't quite tie back anyway and he's a very sensory child who hates the feel of it being tied up and hates hair cuts. He also has thick, quick growing, independent hair with cowslicks and odd partings. It's neater weighed down by it's length rather than sprouting off and mocking gravity Grin

I asked him, and he was teenager non committal

Possibly did on occasion, but not very often

Crikey, kids with SEN getting haircuts is never a breeze. Perhaps sit down for a chat and explain why his hair either needs to be tied back or cut shorter. If he refuses to tie it back, then just make it clear that you have booked an appointment at the barbers / hairdressers and tell him when it is.

Let him know that he still has time to change his mind and start tying it back before the appointment. If he does, great, but if not, then whichever haircut you decide.

Also phone ahead and book an appointment at a place that are good with kids, particularly those with SEN. Explain the situation too so they can be prepared and more compassionate to the situation. A support for you and your DS.
