Advice for bronchiolitis????

Hello! So my 14 month old has been diagnosed with bronchiolitis for the 3rd time this winter!!
I would appreciate tips and advice on how to help him… I feel so helpless I could cry.

His cough makes him vomit (milk and mucus), so we’ve been sleeping on the sofa since Wednesday!?
He reaches a fever of 39 only at night.
He’s refusing to eat any food (he’s breastfed)
Sometimes he doesn’t have the energy to move and he’ll just sit there and stare at the back TV

What we’re doing to help:
Cool mist Humidifier during the day
Vicks plug in at night
Saline nose spray
Paracetamol when fever
Milk when he wants

I just feel at a loose end and I feel like he isn’t getting any better but I spoke to the doctor yesterday and he watched his chest (through video call) and just said to keep doing what I’m doing 🤷🏻‍♀️😬

It’s just shit basically. I’m sorry. You’re basically doing everything we did already. It was the vomiting that got to us. Our little one has it two years ago and I vividly remember her vomiting on Christmas Day and us being so tired as that was day 10 or 11 of vomiting. All of the photos of her show her looking mega skinny whereas 2 weeks before she was a proper chunky baby.

But.. it will eventually get better and I remember mine eating like a horse to catch-up. She regained her weight quite quickly once she felt better and I’m sure yours will too eventually. It is just rubbish though unfortunately.

My DD had similar at that age, we spent a night or two in hospital on one occasion.

We were prescribed a Salamol inhaler (with a spacer) to use when her cough got really bad and she seemed to struggle for breath. That definitely helped so you could maybe ask about that.

Otherwise, unfortunately there wasn’t much we could do except keep a close eye on her breathing and feed little and often to reduce the risk of vomiting.

Hope he improves soon

My paediatrician recommended PROVEN to reduce chest infections.

My son had whooping cough when he was a baby. We found wet towels on the radiators helped with the cough

Honestly your doing it all. Maybe ask for an inhaler that's what we were given, we had it a number of times now hes 5 and not had it for few years now but we keep inhaler and start it as soon as he has a cold.

Can you keep him raised at 30o , use rolled towels under mattress at night.

Candyss · 19/12/2021 17:44

hi. no advice but solidarity. my ex 27 weeker is currently on a ventilator in hospital because he has come down with it and was struggling to maintain his oxygen levels. it's a fucking nasty virus.

DownWhichOfLate · 19/12/2021 17:51

Why are you sleeping on the sofa? Other than that you do seem to be doing everything. As much breastmilk as he needs. Keep up your fluids as well.

intimeforchristmas · 19/12/2021 17:54

I have just have realised that you breastfeeding and he is tired. If he is too tired to feed extract milk and give him in bottle or syringe as it is easier to feed.

Hello! Thank you all! It’s such a nasty virus isn’t it! So horrible not being able to help our babies.
To answer some questions..

Yeah he’s propped up with my arm, only way to get him to sleep.

I’m sleeping on the sofa because my partner works and I don’t wanna wake him and it’s easier to be on the sofa with a bowl in one arm and baby in the other haha!

I would express in a bottle but he still refuses it for some reason, I’ve tried plenty. He won’t take a dummy. He’s slowly starting to take little and often feeds, it’s just whether the poor boy will be able to keep it down x

When my baby was little and in hospital not able to feed as was vomiting they said to feed her with syringe 5 mil every 5 minutes. She got a bit of milk in her mouth at the time. They said to feed her slowly, little but often, which prevented vomiting.

That’s a good idea! I’ll try and give it a go. Thank you!
I think the frustrating thing is, he wants the breast for comfort aswell, and if I don’t give, he kicks up a proper fuss.
