Carols make me cry, every single time!

Just channel hopping and come across choir boys singing Once in Royal David’s City in Westminster Abbey, and that’s it I’m gone!!

I’m not religious and don’t really have much of a childhood connection to carols beyond primary school assemblies. I have no idea why they get me in the feels so much. I sob my way through Carols from Kings every year.

Anyone got a particular carol that gets to them?

In the Bleak Midwinter. Just beautiful x

Oh yes. I remember Christmas 2019, I was newly pregnant and on my way home via London Bridge and the Salvation Army were in the concourse singing carols. I just stood there and openly wept for about half an hour Blush

O Holy Night and Oh Little Town of Bethlehem for me now, but when I was 8 I sang the solo for the ‘what can I give him…’ verse at primary. I’m not going to lie, for 22 years I cringed so much as every Christmas my parents brought it up and spoke about how they’ve never cried so hard at anything. I just found it so incredibly cringe that they were still banging on about it after that long! But now my daughter is 18 months and if I’m ever lucky enough to see her sing something like that you’d better believe I will bring it up (and cry about it!) every Christmas for the rest of my life Grin

Oh, and I didn't answer the question. I love carols, especially anything medieval. One of my favourites is 'Als I Lay On Yoolis Night' and I played it a lot when DP was pregnant and asleep, and DD was kicking me! That Christmas we stayed in a hotel right outside Canterbury Cathedral and it snowed, and all of those memories are bound up with it now.

For pure shivers down the spine I think 'Adam Lay Y-Bounden' or 'Out Of Your Sleep, Arise And Wake'.

Oh my God, I thought I was the only person who sobbed through carol services! They are just so calm and peaceful and remind me of the joy of childhood Christmases. My DP thinks I'm daft getting emotional at things like that but it really hits me in the feels. And for what it's worth, the chances of me watching The Snowman and not bawling my eyes out at Aled Jones singing Walking in the Air is less than zero.

lollipoprainbow · 19/12/2021 22:41

@tiredandveryhungry yes John Rutter wrote some beautiful carols. My mum adored them, she's poorly now so can't bring myself to listen otherwise I'd be a soggy mess !

NoFitStateMum · 19/12/2021 23:26

Same!

SlaveToTwoTabbyCats · 19/12/2021 23:35

Oh yes... In the Bleak mid winter (Darke), The Infant King, The Three Kings, Christ was born on Christmas Day (the pp 'very early, very early Christ was born' always makes me tingle!).

Franticbutterfly · 20/12/2021 21:17

Same. Even more so if children are singing them.

Retrievemysanity · 20/12/2021 21:21

So many but embarrassingly, I went to a concert last week where a children’s choir sang Christmas on the a beach at Waikiki and I was proper crying! Never heard it before and it’s a really upbeat one but I think it’s because I really missed choirs last Christmas and the kids were so happy singing it.

alienbaby · 20/12/2021 21:52

I love god rest yeah merry gentlemen, its just very dark sounding.

I don't like hearing kids sing carols though Blush its annoying with not enough gravitas

alienbaby · 20/12/2021 21:52

*ye

artquejtion · 20/12/2021 22:03

Christmas carols and children singing is guaranteed to have me in tears.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/12/2021 22:04

The Shepherds Farewell leaves me breathless as it's so beautiful and poignant. I've no idea what the lyrics are but it's just gorgeous. Also, Lully, Lullay. Beautiful.

DasherDotComet · 20/12/2021 22:16

Silent night played by a brass band makes me ball my eyes out.

When my nan spent her last Christmas in hospital the hospital band (made up of staff volunteers which makes it even sweeter) came round on Christmas Day and played it. My nan and all the ladies on her ward just sat and peacefully watched them, the whole moment was so emotional.
I cried the whole way home after visiting, and even years later it still brings a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

NeedWineNow · 20/12/2021 23:11

Any carol played by the Salvation Army gets me every time. Guaranteed to be a blubbering mess every time I hear them.

O Holy Night is my favourite.

Pinkycheeks · 20/12/2021 23:26

O Holy Night is my favourite. Also love King Jesus Hath a Garden.
Good will to all ! X

Moaningturtle · 21/12/2021 14:34

Oh yes the Coventry Carol is sure to get me sobbing, absolutely beautiful piece of music.

And I agree with brass bands, they always get me. Particularly around Remembrance Day.
