Do you have earwax in your ears?

Feel really weird talking about this. Sorry if it's gross. I'm guessing my family has lots of earwax because my mum has always had her ears syringed. Whenever I have had a doctor look in my ears they always seem shocked that there is earwax in there. It's always an appointment unrelated and I don't have hearing issues or any ear pain/discomfort. When they look at me sternly and say "there's earwax in there" I think where else would it be?

Anyway, when my son was about a year old they looked in his ears and told me there's wax in there as if it shouldn't be. Now I guess with myself they think I should be doing olive oil in my ears everyday? But I forget because I don't have any ear problems, I'm only ever told by a doctor that there is wax there. Was I supposed to olive oil my son's ears from birth? Is it like brushing your teeth and I'm really gross to forget every night? Is it surprising to have earwax in your ears?

I know I should ask the doctor but I always feel awkward to ask because they say it in a way that I must know what they mean, like it's really obvious earwax shouldn't be found in ears. If nobody had ever looked in my ear with a magnifying glass and a bright light I would never have known there was anything odd about my ears.

MondayYogurt I saw a programme on that and I think I have that gene. My husband on the other hand has very thick, oily earwax and gets pongy despite deodorant, daily showering etc.

I’ve been sternly warned off interfering with ds’ very waxy ears by various doctors. They all remark on how much there is, but when I ask what I should do about it, the answer is “leave it alone”

Mashrums · 19/12/2021 18:59

Thunderface yes this is the sort of tone I mean, as if I haven't flossed enough. Like InconvenientPeg says its a judgemental feeling that I don't have at any other time, it's weird but I'm glad I'm not the only one that's experienced it.

DropYourSword I understand the implication that I must have too much earwax but not sure what I was supposed to ever do about it if I never see it or feel it. The tone used is as if I should have already known how bad my own ear insides were Confused

I won't clean my son's ears anymore than I usually do, just with the damp washcloth in the bath. But if he has problems in the future I'll ask the doctor and ask more questions than I would for myself. I am glad I asked here though because I was starting to think I'd missed a hygiene class at school or something Grin

@MondayYogurt

Side note: There's also a gene for dry earwax/no body odour. It's quite interesting. Gene ABCC11
Oh that's interesting. My dp has very dry ear wax and he never gets bo. He works a manual labout job, plays football loads and doesn't even use Deodorant and he never smells. Ds1 on the other hand has always had pretty sticky ear wax and he gets terrible bo.

Anyone with a fascination/interest/aversion for earwax should really follow the gorgeous Rhys Barber at Audiology Associates on YouTube - one for the sporners 😁

Any ‘shame’ would soon be gone!

No. I never have any. Both ds's have loads.

@Mashrums I know!

I went but I just had an infection. My dad and son felt soooo much better after their visits!

2 year wait for Audiology on NHS here ☹️

My DH gets a lot of earwax, which I hoik out with a special tool. It's horrible but satisfying. He doesn't have to do the same for me as I don't seem to produce it in any quantity.

TroysMammy · 19/12/2021 20:11

My DM has never had excessive ear wax or ear infections and never had her ears syringed. She has age related deafness.

I have never had excessive ear wax or ear infections and never had my ears syringed and I have hearing loss.

My sister, she has no hearing problems, gets her ears syringed regularly and suffers from ear infections especially when she goes swimming.

@Thatsplentyjack It's fairly rare worldwide, I think 2% ish?, but more common in Asia. Absolute winner of a mutation in my books.

Ah, maybe just a coincidence in here then. Pretty interesting though.

There's nothing better than getting a good rummage around in your ear with a cotton bud and coming out with a big lump of earwax Blush

Laufeythejust · 19/12/2021 21:59

I’ve never understood this either! My ears get a look in every now and again during medical for work and they commented on them saying they were very clean (like it was a good thing). I said I used cotton buds and they said not to. Next time I went they said my ears were full of wax (and pulled a face like I was dirty). I’ve gone back to cotton buds. What are you meant to clean them with?
