Anyone else hearing lots of birdsong/noise where you are? (In the middle of the night)

I was in a room at the front of my house and heard loads of birds chattering in a bush outside which I thought was odd.

Just gone to bed and there is so much bird chatter going on at the back of the house as well. Really unusual for this time of night. They usually only start when the sun comes up and aren't normally this loud.

Feeling slightly freaked out by it...

We have a robin that sings loudly outside our bedroom window during the night. I read something recently about birds sleep patterns slowly being altered by the number of outside lights we have - street lights, porch & security lights, garden lights etc. They're confused into thinking it's daylight.

Not noticed as have noisy toddlers but always used to hear the birds having a chatter and sing when we came home from the clubs at around 2 am

Eloisedublin123 · 19/12/2021 06:33

Yes! Just noticed tonight! I’m in Ireland

Moolia · 19/12/2021 06:56

Sun is now coming up and the birds are completely silent. It's so strange! I'm often awake in the night and haven't noticed this before last night.

So weird. I heard them in the middle of the night and thought, hmm that's weird.

FlamingGoat · 19/12/2021 07:33

Rural Scotland and the geese are still here and making a racket every night .

thebabessavedme · 19/12/2021 08:53

Slap bang city centre here, out last night walking and dh and I had a conversation about why the birds were all twittering away, very strange but rather lovely, its so much quieter here than usual, during the last lockdown I could hear owls in the park calling to each other.

Jericha · 19/12/2021 11:04

Yes noticed that here too, sw England. Couldn't sleep so came down and let the dog out and lots of bird song, it was 2.30am.

CharSiu · 19/12/2021 11:14

I also heard birds last night around 3.30 am. I fell asleep on the sofa watching tv and then woke up around 11pm and felt as fresh as a daisy and could not get to sleep.

Also too much noise in the day apparently. Theyve, started to think this may be the main cause as birds still tweet even in the pitch black.
EightWheelGirl · 19/12/2021 13:53

Must admit, in the summer when it's too hot to have windows shut, I've found an owl call on YT and blasted it through the stereo. Shuts em right up!

Holothane · 19/12/2021 13:55

I’ve noticed too at five in the morning in the summer nothing unusual but in winter?

unfortunateevents · 19/12/2021 13:56

Yes! We went into a restaurant in the countryside last night and DH commented on the birdsong - it was really loud, not just a couple of birds either. Strange.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/12/2021 14:02

We've recently had seagulls circling in large groups making a lot of noise late at night, around 11 pm. I'm in North Herts.

niceupthedanceagain · 19/12/2021 14:07

Loads of magpies woke me up in the middle of the night last night!

Harbingers of doom!

TwoPaperAirplanes · 19/12/2021 14:09

I noticed this the other night! It was also really light still at midnight?!

SparkleWhale · 19/12/2021 14:11

Noticed it here too.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/12/2021 14:18

I've been noticing an increase in bird song in general recently, how odd

You'veademe realise that some neighbours have new outdoor lights that they have switched on all night permanently, I wonder if that is confusing the birds

thatsallineed · 19/12/2021 14:21

We never used to, when we had the old yellowish-glow streetlights.

Now, the council has changed all the bulbs for brilliant white ones. There's a hedge and a few small trees at the bottom of our street which are now brightly lit all night, and you do hear birds singing at night now.

lastandfurious · 19/12/2021 14:25

This has just reminded me...I start work at 5am a few days a week and so am up and about very early. I heard the birds on my way to work and thought it was weird. It was pitch black and it sounded like a summer's day.

OddBoots · 19/12/2021 14:28

Yup, at 5am Friday there was one bird making a an awful lot of noise, I used the Birdnet app to identify it and it said Song Thrush - I would have called it a shouty thrush myself.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/12/2021 14:28

Yes, I live right beside a wood. They birds are roosting as early as 3pm some days as it’s so dark so the dawn chorus is much earlier

Tomatalillo · 19/12/2021 14:31

Yes have noticed this a bit more lately. We also have a few neighbours who have started leaving porch lights on overnight a while ago 😡 and now some who leave Christmas lights on too, and some who have solar Xmas lights which haven’t been put on a timer so are on all night. So I think it’s mainly Christmas light pollution ☹️

Possibly this little bit of milder weather too after storms and birds still making their way to winter grounds.

megletthesecond · 20/12/2021 14:37

I heard birdsong at 3am this morning. No lights outside. I wonder if it was mild.

itwasntaparty · 20/12/2021 14:39

Yes! 4am this morning, so strange!
