Would you travel to London between Xmas and NYE?

Hi all, this isn't a covid debate, more of a what would you do?
Me, DH and 2 boys are due to have a couple of days in London (we're in South yorkshire) between Christmas and New year, not for a specific reason, just because we went a few years ago and we really enjoyed it.
Now, Ds1 had covid in Sept and his first jab today, ds2 had covid in Nov but too young for jab. Dh and I had covid with ds2 in Nov, we are now triple vaccinated.
So basically covid wise, we all have either the vaccine or natural immunity, but is it enough?
We can't decide if we are being total morons for even thinking about going given London has declared a major incident today or not?
We have a hotel booking and have restaurant bookings for 3 nights, do we cancel or still go?
In our position, what would you do?

I think you will have to sit on it till we hear what happens post-Christmas, but other than that I’d go.

Joinedforthis2021 · 18/12/2021 23:34

How would you be travelling to London? Car or train?

SouthOfFrance · 18/12/2021 23:36

I'd go, based on your vaccination status and the fact you've also had covid.

Unless we get locked down before that of course

Intheopinionofourexpert · 18/12/2021 23:41

I'd cancel. One of my DCs lives in London. Almost all her friends currently have covid, all of them have had 2 vaccinations. There were more than 23k new cases in London 2 days ago. Why would you go?

KenAdams · 18/12/2021 23:55

Go especially if you've had it recently.

nancy75 · 18/12/2021 23:59

The pub my DH works in has had to close today for at least a week because all but 2 of the staff have covid, I know of a few others too that are not going to open until after NY.
Lots of shows cancelled & some of the museums/galleries closes or closing earlier/longer than planned.
I wouldn’t worry so much about coming & getting ill, I’d be worried it will all be shut when you get here.

CeibaTree · 19/12/2021 00:13

I would go, but then I am already in London with 9 million other people going about our daily lives :) This major incident things is some kind of political statement by Khan, and to say that hospitals are getting full (if I've understood things correctly, but don't quote me!}. I actually think the decision might be taken out of your hands though with the increasingly likely prospect of a 'circuit breaker' or whatever they are calling the restrictions that are about to be announced..

giraffesarefab · 19/12/2021 15:43

Thanks everyone.
We've flipped a coin because we can't decide, heads was going, tails was cancelling. Best of 3, 3 heads - the Queen has spoken, we're going to London! 🤣.

But seriously, we have until Thursday night to cancel so as not to lose any money so we'll see what happens between now and then. We truly believed when we booked it in the early summer that we wouldn't be in this position but there we have it.
We will be travelling by car joined.
Watch this space!

From a getting covid perspective I would.

The only thing that would worry me is will everything be closed. I'd maybe check with the specific places that you want to go to before you set off to make sure.

happytoday73 · 19/12/2021 16:16

I agree with others.. In your position I'd go...

Ilovechoc12 · 19/12/2021 16:25

Defo go - London will be amazing - it will be dead not rammed and hardly any cars on the road. Enjoy 🎄🎅🍷

mamaduckbone · 19/12/2021 16:32

We're on our way right now - similar situation to you...3 of us had covid in September, Dh and I are triple jabbed, ds1 had it in the summer and has had one jab, ds2 hasn't been vaccinated yet as he's only just hit his 12 weeks (booked for Tuesday)

We're staying with friends and have a restaurant booked for tonight. The train is virtually empty, we've all got FFP2 masks and we won't go into any crowded pubs. I'm hoping London will be quieter than usual. Couldn't disappoint the dcs again - it's ds16's birthday treat and he's been so excited.

OnGoldenPond · 19/12/2021 16:42

Well I live in Greater London and currently isolating with Covid. I'm out of isolation on Christmas Eve and I am DEFINITELY getting out and about for the rest of the break, restrictions permitting.

giraffesarefab · 19/12/2021 17:48

Well according to the latest reports, Boris will speak to us on boxing day, restrictions to come in on 27th! No indoor mixing and pubs and restaurants to serve outdoors only. Oh bugger. Guess we're still waiting then....

We're now back and had a lovely time. It felt like a bit of a last hurrah with restrictions on the horizon.

We were careful with masks (FFP2 indoors and on busy streets) and sanitised regularly. It was busy but nowhere near what it can be the week before Christmas. Pubs and restaurants were quiet, shops not heaving, tube was busy but not packed. Covent Garden was pretty hectic but I'd expect that. I'm glad we went - hope you manage it too OP.

We'll LFT between now and Christmas but as a PP said, 9 million Londoners are still getting on with life and they don't all have sodding Omicron
