Can unvaccinated (not covid) children attend school?

This is not goady and not a vax/anti vax thread. I've put here instead of aibu to hopefully get an answer instead of my head ripped off.
So I was having a chat to my MIL earlier and speaking about various members if the family, we ate not sure if a child has had there baby immunisations (mmr etc). My MIL said well yhe child must have done as he is at school and she is sure you need to have had all immunisations to attend. I'm not as sure and if I goole then it's only covid (there is more in the world 🙄) answers that come up, so.i have turned to the wise mumsnet for an answer.

It’s not a requirement in the UK, but it is in some other countries.

Frazzled2207 · 18/12/2021 15:37

There is no box to tick for having had childhood vaccinations when you apply for school. I know a child who hasn’t had any. Is def at school as I see him every day!
I don’t think school would know either way.

No vaccinations are mandatory in the UK.
There will be unvaccinated children in every school.

No, unvaccinated children can attend school, it’s not a requirement to have any vaccine.

Couldntmissthisonethisyear · 18/12/2021 15:38

If you're in the UK then yes, an "unvaccinated" child can attend school and everywhere else in the country.
It's only recently people have felt its ok to ask about someone's medical history and vaccination records.

JanglyBeads · 18/12/2021 15:38

No we have never required vaccination for schooling. Has she maybe lived in a country where they do?

Cooper88 · 18/12/2021 15:39

Ahhhh that's interesting. I seem to remember some question on the school or possibly nursery forms about immunisations, possibly rhe last date of them. It's been a couple if years so I can't remember exactly or if I dreamy that though

I completely agree about asking about the vaccines, tbh unless it is a medical professional I don't like answering the question and will ask if it is necessary.
This was a conversation about the family and an idle curiosity
If the child is or is not vaccinated that is the parents choice.

To answer a question about if my MIL has ever lived abroad, she has but I'm not sure if vaccines are mandates there or not.

No. I thought they only asked for immunisation records as an unvaccinated child may have to stay home in a measles outbreak or similar?

Cooper88 · 18/12/2021 15:46

That could be why I am thinking that the school or nursery asked

Your MIL must be getting confused with another country, does she not wonder where all the unvaccinated children are during the day?

DancingRaindear · 18/12/2021 15:49

No, it’s not required. The 4 in 1 jab for polio, whooping cough, tetanus and… something else Blush is usually called the preschool jab though. Possibly thinking of that?

Lol I didn't ask her that. Although where she lives quite a few people home school, and there are a few family memebers that do also so she has probably assumed that they are homeschooled.

No, unvaccinated children can attend school although the only children who I know whose parents cheerfully tell anyone who will listen that their dc are unvaccinated (I appreciate that lots of parents don't vaccinate their dc and don't broadcast that information) are home educated anyway. My dc's schools both ask about when their latest tetnus vaccine was every year and every year I get embarrassed because I can't remember the date and just have to put the year.

I thought tetanus lasted 10 years, they have it with the preschool ones then again in year 9. Don't see why they need the info every year, only an update if the child was unjabbed and is jabbed later.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/12/2021 16:05

I don't have young children anymore, when did vaccination status become a topic of conversation? I don't remember it really ever being discussed, is it because of covid?

tumpymummy · 18/12/2021 16:08

No, children definitely dont have to have had their chikdhood vaccinations when they go to school in the Uk. And when children are given flu vaccinations at school, then parents can opt out if they want.
