Will I regret this colour?

The decorator has put the first coat of Dulux mocha on the hallway wall. It is much darker than I thought. I like the colour but wonder if I will regret it. Will the dark colour work or could I have something like a feature wall in the hallway

I love it!

You have white woodwork so it looks good

Lindy2 · 18/12/2021 09:53

I like it.

Definitely keep the woodwork white though as a contrast and to lighten things up.

Are you changing the floor? It's fine as it is but if you were changing it I'd keep that light too. Possibly white and mocca brown pattern.

I have this in my living room. We have lots of framed prints on the wall and the background colour really helps them 'pop' (hate that saying) I find white frames look really nice but that's my personal taste

I like it too.

Does your light shade throw a pattern/effect? I couldn’t see it very clearly but it looks lovely, I think darker colours can really highlight a nice effect from light shades. Obviously you lose out on that during the day but I think your wall still looks good.

The stair carpet is being changed (I haven’t chosen it yet) but the tiling is staying.

I am just wondering whether all mocha walls will be too much. The hallway has lots of natural light but the landing is dark.

I do like the colour, but it’s too dark for the hall IMHO.

Decoratingdilemna · 18/12/2021 10:02

@Nitgel - are all your walls mocha? I have always played it safe before and decorated in light pastel type shades so this is out of my comfort zone

I only have mine on one wall personally I would put a lighter shade like you already have on the orher walls.

Horsemad · 18/12/2021 10:04

👍 I like it but would just have it on the wall going upstairs and keep the downstairs lighter, with white woodwork.

I think I will do this

I love it. Looking for a colour to change ours and this may be it. It may seem darker but how much time do you spend hanging around in your hallway and stairs? With good lighting it will be fine all the same. Bright white, light lit up areas aren’t always the best option or needed.

Cafog · 18/12/2021 10:26

I love it! Will take a few days to get used to it but I don't think you'll regret it.

StormBaby · 18/12/2021 10:26

I personally rate a darker colour on a hallway, they are a high traffic area and it will look less grubby later on. It’s a fallacy that dark colours make a room small, it’s actually the opposite as you lose all the edges. My hallways are both navy!

My neighbour has navy living room walls which look fantastic - I am trying to be less safe in my choices, but it doesn’t come naturally.

I like it but don’t forget it’ll dry lighter
I think it’s a lovely warm colour

Eyesofdisarray · 18/12/2021 10:50

Lovely- I'm inspired for my own hall and landing

lilmishap · 18/12/2021 10:58

Dark colours are a leap of faith if you're not used to them, I've been neutral my whole life but this summer did my front room dark green..I was horrified for the first couple days as it was going on, I mean truly regretting it and panicking about how hard it would be to cover up as I was so convinced it was a mistake, I bought a massive pot of magnolia in preparation for 'fixing it'
But then I fell in love with it when it was done.

I think that colour looks gorgeous, it is a really cosy colour.

itshappened · 18/12/2021 10:59

It's not really to my taste to be honest. I definitely would keep it to one wall and use mirrors / art work to lift it.

I’ve literally just had our sitting room done in this. I love it! Think your hall looks great.

All the walls or a feature wall?

I have dulux mellow mocha on my stairs. I adore it. The white woodwork looks really fresh with it.

Squills · 18/12/2021 11:11

Sorry, I think it's too dark. When the second coat goes on it will be even darker.

I'd get some match pots and choose another colour.

When trying out matchpots I paint onto pieces of lining paper so that you don't get the brush strokes from the applicator showing through and you can move the swatch to various aspects to check how it will look on each wall. Just use low adhesive tape to attach them to the wall.

Corbally · 18/12/2021 11:19

I think it looks great. We’ve just had the whole house repainted, and have gone for strong colours throughout — F and B Inchyra Blue, Dead Salmon, Bancha, Breakfast Room Green (in cheaper copies). It looks great. I’m fine with embracing dark, though.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 18/12/2021 13:29

I have it as a feature wall in the bedroom, the other walls are Egyptian cotton. Happy as a feature but I think it would be too dark all over in our room
