Already feeling disappointed for DD this Xmas

DD is 18, she’s worked so hard during Covid at A Levels etc and has landed a great job due to start mid January.

I wanted to do something special with her before she starts work so for Christmas, a few months ago I booked a weekend trip to London, theatre tickets, train, lovely restaurant, hotel stay etc. We were due to go 8th January. This was to be her main present. She’s so looking forward to Christmas but I’m now thinking that we’ll be handing over a gift that we won’t actually be able to do due to Covid.

What would you do? Try and rearrange everything for later on or hold on and hope we can go? Hotel booking is a non refundable premier inn, I did buy extra insurance for the theatre tickets but not sure if that covers us changing our plans, likewise the train tickets.

I’m so disappointed and worried that we’ll be giving her this gift Xmas morning knowing we probably won’t actually be going. I need to get my behind in gear and make a decision quickly to salvage her gift.

WWYD?

Wait and see. If we go into a lockdown I think Premiere Inn will have to refund you and the theatre will usually offer alternative tickets for later.

I'm in a similar situation with lots of things I recently booked with the kids when things weren't looking so dark.

In my experience, if you have purchased the cancellation insurance on your theatre tickets you will be able to move the date with no problem. I’ve done this twice recently, including last weekend for a big west end show due to Covid symptoms (which turned out not to be Covid, but we couldn’t be sure and didn’t want to risk potentially spreading it).

Unless we’re locked down , I’d go . We were at theatre earlier this week , vac passport to get in , no hassle . Everyone on train tube wearing masks . Hotel following all usual guidelines. We had a late meal at a very posh restaurant. I’m going up to London Monday Tuesday next week too . If your daughter/ you go to college/work and shop in supermarkets , them struggling to see difference . Enjoy !

Give it to her anyway and see what's happening closer to the time. It's better to give her a gift that will be "at some point" than to not give her anything.

We will have both had our boosters (mine yesterday) DD is having hers next Wednesday. We’d be happy to go if we can.
I guess they aren’t going to announce a full lockdown before Xmas day (I hope). I’m so sick of this, as I’m sure most people are. There’s no joy in looking forward to anything any more.

The problem may not arise from a lockdown. Theatre is on its knees at the moment - shows are closing daily because of cast illness. I can't see that improving by early January 😔
