U can watch most online for free on dodgy websites

Assuming you want something legal, you can get Sky Cinema on Now TV.

Full price is £9.99 a month, but you don't have to pay that, you can get an introductory deal and when that ends, if you tell them you're cancelling because it's too expensive and they'll offer you a deal. You can often also get a deal with the box and a starter voucher.

We usually pay around a fiver a month for it, but we generally chop and change between Now TV, Prime and Netflix, but be aware, that you have to pay for a lot of the content on Prime, even with a subscription.

There's also some good stuff on Film 4, which is free.

Amazon fire stick or Google chromecast, then buy/rent the film you want on amazon or google play movies respectively.

If you already have amazon prime the Amazon one might be better value.

If you already have a google home/Alexa then pick the one that works with the system you have.

If you have android phones then Google might be easiest.

I just want to be able to pick a film when I want rather than when it's on tv. I don't want anything illegal but also don't want to pay much as we might go a week or 2 with out using it

@BertieBotts I don't have any of those!
No androids, no Prime etc. I'm literally a dinosaur

Well then you can choose whichever one you like! Not much difference between them.

Do you have an old style phone or iPhone?

Hogu · 17/12/2021 17:05

I have an iPhone shortly to be updated to a newish one!

Where do you want to watch the films?

To stream onto a TV, you'll need a smart TV with a USB port to connect the firestick or Now TV stick to.

You say you don't have any 'androids', and if you call yourself a dinosaur, you probably don't have any Apple products, so you must be posting on a laptop so you could watch on that?

BarbaraofSeville · 17/12/2021 17:07

Cross posted, so you do have an iPhone, but you probably wouldn't want to be watching films on it?

Hogu · 17/12/2021 17:14

@BarbaraofSeville No I'd rather watch films on tv. I do have a smart tv so know it has USB ports etc

Also depends on the type of films you’d like to watch.

I find that:

Netflix is great for newish films, huge back catalogue of TV series. They also have their own films and series they produce (Bridgerton etc). Plenty of films from late 90s/2000s. They don’t have any classic/older films e.g anything Hepburn, Cary Grant.

Amazon Prime TV has lots of films but some you have to pay extra to rent. These change frequently so you might watch a film for free one month and they want to charge you the next.

NOW TV has SKY Cinema. They have lots of newer releases but their catalogue of older films is limited. They tend to have blockbusters. Good thing about this is you can pay month by month so if you want to skip a few months, you easily can.

Apple TV was good for TV series but limited on films. For us, definitely not worth the fees.

BBC iPlayer is free and has a surprisingly good classic movie collection if that’s of interest.
