Why does water taste better from a bottle?

Meadowbreeze · 17/12/2021 11:29

Ok I just need to know I'm not alone in this. I love water from a bottle. It can be a normal 500ml plastic water bottle refilled with tap water and I will drink it so quickly. Give me a glass of water and I will struggle.
I don't know what it is. I hate those reusable bottles, they just don't have the same chug sound and soft crunchy plastic. I have a small evian bottle I just refill with tap water and can drink like 5 of those a day. Give me a glass of water and I feel like I'm forcing myself.
I know this is probably not environmentally conscious and may be a bit gross, I've had my little bottle for months 🙈. I can't be the only one though.

Am I the only one with this? Please tell me I'm not crazy.

I can’t exactly agree with you on this (and think that 5 small evians a day would put me on the floor with dehydration) BUT I can confirm that Diet Coke tastes so much better out of a can and tea tastes better out of a china mug

Meadowbreeze · 17/12/2021 11:56

@ShirleyPhallus I must be misunderstanding, 5 small evians a day is 2.5l water 😳 how could that cause dehydration?
Ooh I agree with you on the tea! I only like real coke though and much prefer it out of those small glass bottles.

Well, water definitively tastes better cold!
Not too cold, though. It needs to be chilled, not close to freezing.
Otherwise, I cannot taste a difference from bottle or glass.
I reckon you do not like the feel of glass against your lips, and prefer plastic.
Or, many people do not rinse their crockery after washing up, and that surely has a taste! Even dishwashers may leave something behind, with the shining chemical that they use.
I bet you you only rinse your plastic bottle and never use detergent on it?

I thought you meant the small small ones

I don't think it does - I like it in a glass.

We have lovely tap water where I live so I rarely bother with bottled. When I lived in a hard water area, the water was vile - I used to like Lidl's sparkling in a green bottle but I don't think they do it any more.

I've treated myself to some Pelligrino for Christmas.

Meadowbreeze · 17/12/2021 12:12

@MushMonster hm i think you're right. I can definitely tell when a glass has been in the dishwasher Vs handwashed and it makes me gag. I also don't like super cold water. I normally fill my bottle and wait a bit before drinking. There is a perfect moment when it's not too cold but it's also not warm and I can literally chug a whole bottle of water at that point.

I think the bottle thing is actually the neck. Its really comfortable to drink it from a small exit than a huge glass. I've found reusable bottles also have a larger hole so maybe that's it. Maybe I choked as a child and I'm subconsciously scared of glasses. I only like the normal ones though, if a bottle has a sports cap I unscrew it. Freud would have a field day with this 😂

I find one of those disposals bottles starts to make the water taste wrong after it's been refilled a few times.

Meadowbreeze · 17/12/2021 12:18

@ShirleyPhallus ahh that makes sense! Those are like hamster sized.

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake Interesting. I actually don't really like bottled water. I probably have the grossest tap water in the country (London) but I really love it.
Scotlands tap water tastes like it's straight from an evian bottle though, it's incredible.

I don't think I have ever had Scottish tap water - I've only ever been up there for work purposes so haven't stayed in a house.

I'm in Yorkshire. Moving from a hard to a soft water area was amazing - I took a limescaled kettle with me from my previous house and a few weeks later it was sparkling inside!

MargaretThursday · 17/12/2021 12:26

Best is straight into a glass from our fridge tap.

ParkheadParadise · 17/12/2021 12:27

Best is Scottish Water straight from the tap. 💧💧💧

Confused 5 of those is 1.65L. How could you be dehydrated after drinking that much water? How much do you drink a day? I drink no water other than what is in my tea.

H1978 · 17/12/2021 12:28

I have to agree with op, I can’t drink from a glass either. I use a Starbucks plastic bottle that comes with a straw to drink water.

Newbabynewhouse · 17/12/2021 12:31

I agree x

midsomermurderess · 17/12/2021 12:33

I don't think it does. I much prefer it straight from the tap.

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 17/12/2021 12:34

I think it's like milk...

If you are used to semi-skimmed milk, the others taste too thin or too creamy. However, if you 'make' yourself drink fully skimmed for long enough, semi-skimmed starts to taste too creamy.

If you drank glass tap water long enough, the bottled one would taste weird.

ImInStealthMode · 17/12/2021 12:35

I agree with you OP.

Oddly at home if I'm getting myself a glass of water I automatically reach for a plastic tumbler. Any other cold drink I use a glass.

Maybe water tastes better from plastic than glass? Or maybe it tastes 'colder' from a substance that isn't naturally as cold as glass can be?

ShirleyPhallus · 17/12/2021 12:37

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry personally I get thirsty and drink a lot more than that, I also do a lot of exercise so need to drink way more

Tea and coffee make me feel quite thirsty too so there is no way I could go without water

Meadowbreeze · 17/12/2021 12:51

Oh gosh that's impressive! @maryandgerrylivinginderry I think I'd have an awful headache if I only drank tea and coffee, not to mention lack of bowel movements 🙈

My in-laws in live in a hard water area in England and we’re in central Scotland and I find the water horrible to drink when we visit them as our tap water is so good. Even the kids have complained about it, so now we tend stop off at Sainsbury’s on the way to get Scottish bottled water to drink when we’re there!

I don’t drink any coffee. Just tea. Without going into details my bowels move a couple of times a day Grin
MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 17/12/2021 14:31

Occasionally I’ll have a glass of milk or a can of coke. Very rare though. I take a glug of water if I have to take tablets.

ufucoffee · 17/12/2021 14:34

It doesn't.

ISpyCobraKai · 17/12/2021 14:44

I only ever drink water from a refillable bottle, it tastes better, plus at home if I use a glass my cats drink it when I'm not looking

Porfre · 17/12/2021 14:49

Water from a glass is best.

I had refillable bottle and tolerate plastic bottles that the water comes in
