You can't shout at women footballers

I have a group of (mixed) football supporting fans. We were discussing women's football and the fact that whilst it has improved enormously over the last few years none of us would really choose to watch it.

One of the men said it makes him feel uncomfortable because a large part of watching football is shouting abuse encouragement at the players and he wouldn't ever shout at a woman.

Is that a good or a bad thing?!

Well he can shout encouragement at a sportswoman presumably? If not why not? I marshall a lot of running races and shout, whoop and holler encouragement at all comers.

If it's the abuse he particularly enjoys then I think he has bigger problems to work throughConfused

Probably crtisism/advice more than abuse. He's not a sweary aggressive type at all.

Why would none of you choose to watch it?
Is it the lack of violence, no dramatics to win penalties or the decent behaviour both on and off the pitch that puts you off?

Advice is also fine. Again looking as a runner rather than a team sport, I've had men along a race route shout advice on pace, posture, the route ahead etc and never taken it as anything more than the helpful way in which it was meant.

I'm unsure what his concerns are.

For me it's just inferior football. The same game played at a much slower pace.

I like women's tennis because it's a completely different game to the men's, different tactics and skills. Women's football is the same, but not as good.

And if you think there's no violence or dramatics in women's football you haven't watched any!

"inferior football" "not as good" - you sound lovely! If you had a footballing DD and a footballing DS (like i do), would you be saying that to your DD!? Horrible attitude.

If you dont like it, dont watch it. There's really no need to come on MN and spout misogynism, thanks all the same.

Peakedtoosoon · 17/12/2021 10:32

It's not as good. Watching the top women footballers is like watching men's non league.

I don't choose to watch it. I was just interested in my friend's feelings.

When I say not as good, I mean not as entertaining. Which is what it's about when you've paid to watch it.

How about instead of viewing it as inferior you just view it as different.
Hmm

That's my point with the tennis example. Women don't play football differently (perhaps they should?) they play the men's game slower.
