What would you do? 9 year old possible UTI

Hiya, this should probably go in Health but I'm hoping to pick up a few replies here. I'm worried that my 9 year old daughter may have a UTI - sorry for tmi, but has been bedwetting, having accidents and says it "stings". She doesn't cope well with physical discomfort and we're on the edge of meltdown mode, so I really want to get whatever it is sorted ASAP.

Problem is, GP is running only vaccine clinics this PM and the thought of taking her to a walk-in is not appealing on many counts!

She's had unsweetened cranberry juice and is drinking plenty, but if she needs antibiotics I'd rather she got them sooner than later.

Any ideas? I'm drawing a bit of a blank!

Whilst it does seem likely she has a UTI, if T1DM is a possibility she needs to be seen tonight - it isn’t something that can wait until tomorrow.

Jourdain11 · 16/12/2021 18:58

I called back to 111 and got an out of hours appointment for 7.30 - heading off there now.

Thx again for the advice - I am sorry that my last reply was a bit abrupt and curt, I was distracted!

Oh gosh. So glad you're getting seen. Absolutely the right thing to do for T1.

spiderlight · 17/12/2021 16:30

I hope she's been seen now and is OK.

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2021 17:03

Thanks for the nice replies! I haven't been on today. We got sent straight through to paed a&e because the out of hours GP suspected T1 diabetes and/or PIMS (she had Covid a few weeks back). And unfortunately she has been diagnosed T1 diabetic (I'm not sure how they can tell it's Type 1 so quickly, but she has literally zero risk factors for Type 2 tbf) but thankfully in the clear as regards PIMS. Poor thing - she's had a dreadful year and she seems totally in shock at the moment. I also feel lousy that I didn't suspect it and so does DH, especially as we both have family history. I actually always assumed kids developed it younger for paediatric onset.

I'm certainly extremely grateful to those of you who suggested it.

Oh - and she does also have a UTI!

Aww your poor DD, I don’t know much about T1 but getting dx must be half the battle. Good luck for the future Flowers

CrystalMaisie · 17/12/2021 20:30

If you’re on Instagram, look up Father or daughters. One of his young daughters has recently been diagnosed with t1 diabetes, after Covid.

Poor thing. Some as a parent it’s hard to know when to act or not.

Virus can trigger diabetes. I know this is a big concern for children post covid.

Thanks for the 👉 I've followed him.

Jourdain11 · 17/12/2021 21:28

@Fallagain I had heard this but tbh I was more worrying about post viral type thing as she seemed so run down and lethargic since Covid. She was quite ill whereas my younger two had literally no symptoms although tested positive.

DD1 is presently not fond of school so I can be a bit Hmm about illness. She has also lost weight, but again I just thought it was from being ill (she's got a fast metabolism and loses weight easily anyway).

Anyway, you can imagine I'm feeling bad for being a bit clueless. I've been stressed with work being stressful and the kids being in isolation and all the rest of it, and I just feel I wasn't paying enough attention.

@Englishrosegarden

Don't want to worry you here but the excessive drinking, thirst, tiredness and sudden onset of bedwetting are all symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. Please call the doctor and get her checked out.
This was such a good pick up @Englishrosegarden!

My GP sent her kid to school with a broken collarbone for two days. It’s difficult enough parenting but there has been so much going on for the last 18 months it’s literally impossible to do it all. No one kind. Be kind to yourself.

Thefuturestory · 17/12/2021 23:24

Well done for pushing for her to be seen. A shock bit at least you know now

Rainallnight · 18/12/2021 00:45

Wow, OP, well done for picking this up. I think you should be giving yourself a pat on the back for being so on it rather than beating yourself up. And we’ll done @Englishrosegarden!

BashfulClam · 18/12/2021 02:55

At least you know what is wrong and can get treatment. Poor thing.

I once got told by a nurse not to drink any extra on account of having a UTI. She said that it won’t ‘flush’ the infection out and all it does it make you wee more which you don’t want when weeing is so painful, so stick to drinking the normal recommended amount of liquid. This is weird DH has been hospitalised twice with UTI’s (he gets intense pain and needs morphine) and each time has been told to drink 2-3 litres of plain water, it was even in his last discharge letter.

SummeHoliday · 18/12/2021 03:16

I also took my DD to see the GP with a suspected UTI and found out she had T1 diabetes (she was almost 9). I imagine you're in shock & there's a whole lot to learn now!!

Hope all goes well - and it will get easier!

Eeve · 18/12/2021 18:38

I've heard tales of T1 being really unwell with covid. Big adjustment period for you both, but, at least you know now.

Jourdain11 · 18/12/2021 23:09

@Eeve do you mean developing T1 after having Covid badly or people who have T1 having a bad time with Covid?

I'm interested - I had heard about kids developing T1 diabetes after having Covid, but obviously in DD's case there's a genetic predisposition anyway. Maybe she always would have developed it, but Covid triggered it? I'm not trying to be scaremongery btw, just wondering. I guess it's impossible to know!

She's doing well but finding it all a bit hard going at the moment.

My first uti was when I was 9, I'm 27 now and have suffered very badly until a few years ago when I saw a urologist who put me on a course of antibiotics for 6 months. This worked and now I very rarely have them, I take D-Mannose at the first twinge.

I would call NHS in case she has it over Christmas and they might be able to organise out of hours for antibiotics. I really feel for her. I hope she gets better soon. Sitting in a bath and drinking calmolmile tea helps.
