Wedding anniversary card etiquette?

SantasSocks · 16/12/2021 12:12

Is it normal / etiquette for other family members to send wedding anniversary cards to a married couple each year? I don't mean on a special anniversary such as 25th, but every year.

Just curious as DH and I always receive one from MIL and MIL's sister, but I wasn't sure if we were supposed to reciprocate for their wedding anniversaries (we haven't been).

every family have their own take on traditions, it's up to you if you want to join in.

DHs family always give us cards. I find it a bit bonkers so never reciprocate. DH and I don't even give each other cards.

Not in my family - my parents have their 50th anniversary next year so will probably send a card then! But otherwise no.

Ok interesting. I think I find it a bit bonkers too.

Never heard of this. Nothing wrong with it but don't think it's particularly common.

We do in our family between my parents, DB and ourselves.

My grandmas send/sent cards to my parents for their anniversary and my parents got each other cards. I've never sent my parents a card but I'll send a happy anniversary WhatsApp to them and my sister. I don't give DH a card either, don't see the point tbh.

We get a card from PIL and another IL Without wishing to be ungrateful I absolutely believe that anniversaries are just for the couple, so I don't reciprocate.

Pascha · 16/12/2021 12:39

My parents don't even acknowledge their own anniversary (50+years) let alone anyone else's. PIL always send a card and DH always sends one to them.

Oddly enough, it's my parents with the happy, stable relationship and the PIL who struggle.

We do in our family, both my siblings and ILs . I also send to my friend & her husband as I was their bridesmaid (30 years ago) .
But we send cards at the drop of a hat - including pets etc . Bonkers indeed but we all do it.

SkepticalCat · 16/12/2021 12:40

My parents send one to us each year (we only reciprocate on their "big" anniversaries) and my best friend also sends a card each year. I do reciprocate that one as it obviously means a lot to her and its no effort to remember (the anniversary date is near a family birthday, so I never forget).

TokyoSushi · 16/12/2021 12:40

We get one from DP's and from one friend who was our Bridesmaid.

DappledThings · 16/12/2021 12:41

I think it's weird. I would only buy an anniversary card if the couple were having a party

Some families are really keen on cards/messages marking all sorts of occasions which is fine for them.

My family we generally don't which is fine for us.

I think the issue comes when someone joins one sort of family from the other and can take offense/feel unprepared.

I also don't think the family who doesn't send cards/messages should have to change their own way of doing things just because the other family does.
