Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend any good kid's books to give as Christmas gifts?

I don't have kids myself but am looking for inspiration for some for my nieces (age 7 and 9). Not sure what they're into but they have some Roald Dahl books among others. Be good to give them some about kids going on adventures or similar I'm thinking. I used to love reading when I was little but no idea what's age appropriate for them so thought I'd ask here. Thanks

Tom Fletcher's books are excellent and much loved by my dc. The younger one might like Rainbow Grey.

Mysterious Benedict Society

The secret of platform 13, actually anything by Eva ibbotson!

Books by Diana Wynne Jones

For the younger child: the magic tree house series, Dory Fantasmagory, The Bad Guys

So many great books out there, if you have time you could pop into your local library and do a "reference interview" with the children's librarian, they will have great ideas!

Adam Kay has a couple of books for children that age.

For the 7yo:
Ladybird Tales of Adventurous Girls
Pippi Longstocking gift edition

For the 9yo:
The illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (pricey though)
Forgotten Fairy Tales of Brave and Brilliant Girls
Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls
Any of the MinaLima books like this Alice in Wonderland one.
13 Storey Treehouse series
The Worst Witch

Wild Child by Dara McAnulty would be a super gift, especially for the 9 year old. Written by an award winning naturalist, and beautifully illustrated and produced, it encourages the reader to discover local habitats such as the garden or park.

Thanks so much for these recommendations! Will have a look online and see if I can track them down. I quite fancy reading the Wild Child one myself!

Bookshop Girl by Sylvia Bishop.

Property Jones loves living in a bookshop, but she's hiding a whopper of a secret... she can't actually read! When Property's family win The Montgomery Book Emporium in a surprise raffle, Property's life is turned upside down. But will her secret come out?

Thanks. I managed to get a signed copy of the Wild Child book, hope DN9 likes it!
