Whats the etiquette regarding Christmas card for previous occupants?

It's our 8th Christmas in our "new" house".
Surely all who matter would know by now that the people who used to live here have a new address.
Yet we still get random mail for them and just got another card. It's annoying.
They live close enough so when MrZing does Sat shop he makes the effort to swing by and drop things off but honestly I think he's been courteous for long enough.

So I'm considering options and wondering what you actually do in a similar situation with such mail:

A, suck it up and pass it on as until the end of times. perhaps notify The Guinness records panel for a potential entry.

B. chuck it
C. open it and display it nonchalantly
D. open it to see if there's cash in it, keep cash, destroy all evidence
E. return to sender (I don't actually know how)
F. send a Christmas card from us
G. some other solution

D 😂😂😂
No, probably B would be better.

ClaudiaWankleman · 15/12/2021 12:14

At the 8th Christmas, I'd open and display. No one who matters will still be sending mail to the old address.

You can return to sender by crossing out your address and writing RTS on the front. If the sender hasn't given a return address it will be lost in the ether though, which isn't particularly useful for anyone.

MintJulia · 15/12/2021 12:16

I cross out my address, write 'pls forward to XXXXX' and stick the envelopes back in the post box.

Anything official looking gets 'RTS, no longer at this address' , and any junk mail goes in the bin.

I am over 20 years in and now rip up without shame the Woodland trust magazine, raffe tickets from another charity and the single Christmas card from 'Holly' which arrives every year.

underneaththeash · 15/12/2021 12:18

We've been in our house for a similar amount of time. 2 Christmas cards for the previous occupant so far (who incidentally died over a year ago).

I recycled after 5 years.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/12/2021 12:19

there's a return address hence my pondering about option F🤣

thanks for tip regarding how to return

20 years and "Holly" still hasn't gotten the memo?🤣🤣🤣🤣 that's hilarious

I'd open it to see if there was a return address inside, and if so, return to send as "no longer at this address"

If no return address, I'd bin it.

Are you the lovely people who bought my parents house and are still hand delivering the odd bit of mail eight years on? If so many thanks. Sadly in their case the super elderly people who still send to you will NEVER get to grips with the new address! Good luck whatever you decide!

traka · 15/12/2021 12:21

Chuck it

I just chuck them but then I do that to cards addressed to me too

ChessieFL · 15/12/2021 12:25

Deliver it to the rightful owners this year, but tell them that it’s the last time you’ll do it so they need to tell their friends their new address!

jerrywesterby · 15/12/2021 12:43

I've lived in my house 16 years and every year I get a card for the previous but one owner! Surely the senders must realise by now that they've moved! It's usually a lovely card as well so now I just put it up and enjoy it on their behalf Grin

I was thinking along these lines. An elderly Aunt (RIP) of mine went years posting cards to the wrong address until my mum managed to physically get hold of her address book and change it for her. Telling her, repeatedly, that we had moved just didn't work! By the time she got off the phone or read the change of address card, she'd forgotten and, next Christmas/Birthday, out would come the ancient address book and off she'd go!

That said, I probably would still do 'return to sender' if there is a return address on.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/12/2021 12:53

@jerrywesterby
😁

the previous owners, say A & D lived here for 40 odd years.
a few years ago we got a letter to addressed to someone who must have lived here before them.
It was from a University in Holland and looked important so we asked A & D if maybe they had someone staying here who gave a UK address out for correspondence but they said definitely not while they lived here!

I actually contacted the Uni (I did open to letter to see what it was regarding) and tried to find out if I could help in anyway but they said not to worry.
I felt bad throwing the letter away, it was like a tragic plot twist.
