I'm stupid - I know but what does this sentence mean!

I have been sent my contract for a new job and went straight to read the holidays part!

It says all staff get a minimum of 22 days and then this-

The minimum entitlement for all staff who immediately prior to the leave year have not less than 5 years' continuous Local Government service equates to 25 days based on a full time position.

Does this mean after 5 years it increases to 25 days?!

Yes. If you have five years service at the start of the leave year

Double3xposure · 14/12/2021 18:16

Yes. Unless you are transferring directly from another local government job, I’m which case you can carry it across.

But you have to reach the 5 years before the start of the leave year.

So if the leave Year is 1 Jan - 31 December and you are starting the job on 3 January, you will have to wait 6 years .

I think so. Its certainly common in local government. But it's a convoluted sentence (also common in local government!)

Thank you. The leave year starts in April and I'll be hopefully starting my new job after Xmas.

helpfulperson I know I'm sure they could have worded that much more better!

Very convoluted way of saying it, but I think so! My employer grants extra holiday after 2 and then 5 full calendar years but ours is a bit more simply explained in the contract.

Chloemol · 14/12/2021 18:55

If you are talking about the standard local government contract used by councils then yes normally it’s 22 days plus bank holidays plus 2 other days, going up to 25+8+2 after 5 years, or at least ours are
