Smart TVs can you turn off the internet bit?

I’ve never had a smart TV, nor do I really want one but my none smart TV is broken and is in for repair, if it can’t be fixed I’ll need a new TV. I can’t find another none smart TV within my price range (if MN can then please, want it to be new, 46-50 inch no more than £400, needs at least 2 HDMI ports)

So if I end up with a smart TV can I turn the apps and internet bits off on it? I have a PS4 and an Ipad that I’d rather DD (aged 7) used to access the internet so I’d like to basically make it a none smart TV as she knows how to change the channels and it’s just me and DD at home.

Just don't connect it to your wi-fi when you set it up.

MyOtherProfile · 14/12/2021 15:01

You could just not put your WiFi code in.

NoneSmartTV · 14/12/2021 15:04

Oh thank you both I never thought of that!

Do you have to download the apps like netflix and stuff for it? So I can just not download those so it works like a normal TV?

Usually the apps come built in to a Smart TV.

As above though, if you don't put the Wifi code in then it wouldn't connect to any of them if your daughter tried to go on to them.

You're missing out - smart tvs are brill

Brusca · 14/12/2021 15:36

If you want to use streaming apps you'll need to connect it to your wifi.

I don't need to as my DD will watch netflix via the PS4 which I'm much more comfortable with, I can't really explain why.

Just don't connect it to the Internet.

Smart TVs come with the apps preinstalled and even have buttons to open the apps on the remote. But you can just use it as a normal telly, plug in your devices and access the internet off them.

We have a smart TV and don't use the smart functionality on ours. I don't know if it's connected to the internet TBH since we updated the WiFi code. We have a sky box and I'm happy to run everything we watch through that downstairs.

You can connect and disconnect at will by going in to settings on my smart tv.

Try AO.com they seem to have suitable TVs for you.
Good customer service and delivery.

Smart tvs don't have a proper browser so they're much safer than an iPad if that's your concern.

Not my concern, it's more being able to very closely monitor what she's doing, I have an app on my phone which watches exactly what she's doing on the tablet, she doesn't have access to Netflix or Disney + on the tablet

I can lock the apps on our tv

madisonbridges · 14/12/2021 17:11

Tesco have 49" tvs for under £400. Or at least they did before the Black Friday sale so I'm sure they will be at that price again now.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 14/12/2021 17:13

Sorry, I can't help with your question, but wondered which app you have and can you see what's she's doing in real time? Can you read the messages etc if she's on say WhatsApp?

KittenCatcher · 14/12/2021 17:16

Argos have lots of tv in those sizes for uner £400

megletthesecond · 14/12/2021 17:21

Try a charity shop. The British heart foundation and community furniture projects always have nice non-smart TV's in.
I have a destructive child and usually spend around £60 on a large second hand TV.
