If you bought your wrapping paper from Sainsbury’s

What did you think of not having the plastic wrap around it?

I like the idea in theory, but it just didn’t work. The “easy peel” labels were not easy peal and tore the paper either completely, or ripped the pattern off.

It would probably have worked better to have parcel paper or something similar as an outer package

Worked fine for me, even after DS had used it as a light sabre

Earwigworries · 13/12/2021 16:22

Ha - just had this issue … I ended up tearing the bands round the paper and ignoring the ‘peel here’ instructions .. that did ok if careful

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 16:23

Fine, mine was not from Sainsbury's but also without plastic for the first time. It was only a tiny bit that tore and we need to limit plastic where possible.

Oh yes I agree and I know Sainsbury’s have pledged to reduce their plastic waste to 0 by a certain year.

I’m just saying, this didn’t work and it needed an outer layer even if it was a sheet of parcel paper wrapped around it. It doesn’t need to be plastic, but it needed something

The instructions clearly indicated to cut off the paper that has been stuck down... but I peeled the labels off carefully and it was fine.

LER83 · 13/12/2021 16:28

I had the same with M&S paper. It had 3 label things on it and I ripped a whole load of paper trying to open it!

MissMCAS · 13/12/2021 16:29

It didn't easy peel as easily as I hoped, but it still worked ok.

Very happy not to have all the plastic waste & just spend 5 seconds longer starting the label off.

ReeseWitherfork · 13/12/2021 16:30

Bought from Sainsbury's and had the same problem. Why were there so many of them?! I just wrapped a toddlers present first so probably not fussed at the state of the paper.

Soubriquet · 13/12/2021 16:32

I bought the extra large long rolls…there was 6 to get off!

Phantom1 · 13/12/2021 16:39

I bought rolls of the patterned brown wrapping paper from Sainsburys. Mine had at least five labels per roll. Annoying.

SylviaTrench · 13/12/2021 16:40

I couldn't get the labels off cleanly, but didn't mind losing the half inch or so of paper.
I noticed they were selling foiled wrapping paper though, our local council have said any paper that's foiled or glittered can't be recycled.

kingprincess · 13/12/2021 16:42

Same @LER83 the M&S one was terrible! Completely ripped the paper! Surely they could put a paper ring round it without sticking it down?!

InDubiousBattle · 13/12/2021 16:56

I saw some I quite liked but didn't buy it because I only had an Aldi bag and a rucksack and it was drizzling so it would have ruined.

MiloAndEddie · 13/12/2021 16:56

It says on it that they give you extra on the roll for protection, so I followed the instructions and just discarded* the first bit.

*recycled obviously

Hen2018 · 13/12/2021 17:00

It was great.

Grumpyosaurus · 13/12/2021 17:04

I bought paper without plastic wrap this year and was really pleased to be able to.

Bloody hate single use plastics, esp ones you can't recycle. Insanely wasteful, bad for the planet and often unnecessary.

Jumpingintochristmas · 13/12/2021 17:04

I got some and the roll was longer in itself to allow for the wrapped outer layer to be discarded if necessary.

Greenrubber · 13/12/2021 17:06

I decided to not buy Christmas wrapping paper and bought brown parcel paper instead but it's bloody thick and a lot harder to wrap than I thought it would be
But at least it's 100% recyclable

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 13/12/2021 17:11

Like the idea of it but got rained on on the walk home. Should have checked the weather before I left! I put it on the radiator to dry. The outer layer was all wrinkled so has to cut it off but rest of it was fine so overall im happy with it and good to reduce plastic waste.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/12/2021 17:16

I had to throw loads of my M&S Collin wrapping paper away as the label stuck and it tore.

GoodVibesHere · 13/12/2021 17:18

I bought John Lewis paper with no plastic wrap and spent bloody ages opening it and ripped a fair amount of paper. Apparently it was 'easy peel' 😂

rbe78 · 13/12/2021 17:40

As a PP said, they purposely give you an extra bit of paper so if the outer bit gets ruined by the stickers/marks you can cut it off and throw it away (in the recycling bin, obviously).

If people object to even the tiny amount of extra effort it takes to make one extra cut, no wonder the planet's so fucked!

TheFairyCaravan · 13/12/2021 17:49

Bought mine from Wilkinson’s with no plastic wrap. The labels came off really well. I was impressed with it.

HeyupitsChristmas · 13/12/2021 18:35

I bought mine from Dunelm. I slit the cross over join on the label with some sharp scissors, trimmed the paper and recycled the labeled bit.

I've really noticed a reduction in plastic packaging this year which is great - still a long way to go though.

CarButtonCloth · 13/12/2021 18:51

Mine from Wilkos was the same and whilst I'm all in favour of cutting down on plastic, personally I found the peel off labels a complete pain in the arse, took ages to remove, ripped the paper and I couldn't see why they needed 3/4 of them per roll.
