Christmas Present for Newborn

A family members baby was born last week and we would like to get the baby something for Christmas. However I am having a complete mind blank about what to buy!

Obviously anything we'll buy will either be a gift for the parents/something the child can't make use of yet but just wondering if anyone has any inspired ideas? He's a lovely baby boy, budget up to around £50...

@KateInHappyland
We had an Ollie the owl. It was a curse. It only plays for 20mins then stops abruptly waking up your peacefully sleeping newborn Angry
If you can get a continuous white noise machine they are far better. We used a speaker but then your phone is tied to it. I think a 'my hummy' might have a continuous play feature but you'd have to check.

Ah that doesn’t sound like fun, thanks for sharing your experience! White noise sounds like a good plan too.

I'd get a set of Roald Dahl books. They wont use them for a good couple of years, but once they hit about 3, they'll be used through to late teens.

That very much depends on the child. DD had 2-3 books she may read once, others she wasn't intererested at all.

I personally can't see the fascination with him as well.

We also got several classics who are just gathering dust as DD now as a teen finds them hard to get into and she is an absolute bookworm.

Sensory toys, have a look on etsy and you could get a personalised bag or box and fill them. You could add some flashcards in black and white and some colour ones. I got a pack each for a fiver on etsy and they are really good quality. I have been using them since my baby was a few weeks old and they helped her to focus her eyes. At 14 weeks she kicks when I bring them out. A fabric book would be nice for when baby starts to reach out. Works have 2 for £10 on gifts at the moment and I bought two lovely sets of board books for babies from there. They are the kind of sets that have an animal book, numbers, letters etc. They are strong and sturdy.

Otherwise you could do a voucher for Next so that they can buy clothes as and when they need them.

Sensory muslins/items from Etta Loves. They are designed to be perfect for babies to see between 0-4ish months and the 5+. They are meant to be super engaging for babies and so can help you get 5 minutes peace! I’ve bought some for when my baby arrives in January as I didn’t discover the brand until my first was too old

@KateInHappyland I wouldn't get any white noise toy. I have Ewan and a Hummy but the best thing that we use is a free app on our phone. You can vary the volume much more and there's a range of white noises and pink noise and some other pitches that change as your child will grow. Babies will have certain noises that work better at different times.

Of the toys a Hummy is better than Ewan as it has a motion sensor that kicks in if the baby stirs.

OP let us know what you go for.

I've gone for a tummy time Mirror and a 6 piece pastel Grimm's rainbow. Still looking at some books as an extra!

Decided against any clothes as they have extremely particular taste and wouldn't want to get it wrong. Thanks again all!

My aunty bought DS1 lots of clothes in different sizes (3-6, 6-9, 9-12) for our newborn at Christmas and we were so thankful for it. Especially as everyone else had swamped us with newborn clothes and then we had the shock of having nothing for 0-3!
